DeRaad, Albert 1874-1940 and Minnie Van Meveren Family

This story was taken from pages 376-377 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Albert De Raad was born to Arie and Gertrude Rysdam De Raad on Jan. 29, 1874, on a farm located two miles west of Orange City, in Sioux Co., Ia. It was here the Arie De Raad family filed their homestead claim in 1870. They were in the first band of colonists who came from Pella, Ia., the original colony of Holland immigrants formed in America, in 1847.

In 1882 the family left Sioux Co., in Ia., and filed a tree claim near Grandview, S.D. It was here that Albert grew to manhood. After the death of his father, Arie, the young widow and her family returned to Sioux Co., near Alton, Ia. (See the BIOS of Albert’s parents, Arie De Raad and Gertrude Rysdam on this web page.)

Albert was engaged in farming near Alton, Ia. when he met Minnie Van Meveren. She was born on a farm two miles north of Alton, Ia., on May 31, 1878. They were married at the home of the bride’s parents on Aug. 30, 1899.

Albert and Minnie De Raad farmed most of their married life in the Sioux Co. area with the exception of a few years when they farmed near Lakota, N.D. They returned to Iowa in 1915 to farm in the Ireton vicinity, until they retired from farming. They purchased a home in Ireton in 1927. An interesting sidelight about the house purchased in Ireton was that it was built on that site before the town of Ireton was platted in 1882. It was built by the Close Brothers from LeMars, Ia., who were land agents for the area. The downstairs served as the offices for an agent named “Sears” and the family lived upstairs. It was later remodeled and made into a comfortable home. In 1935 they purchased another home in Ireton where they lived the remainder of their lives.

They were the parents of six children, one child dying at birth. Their family includes Bertha (Mrs. Judson McDougall), Leon, Ida (Mrs. Edward Koops), Arthur, and Edna (Mrs. Weston Karr).

Albert De Raad died on December 5, 1940 and was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton, Ia. Mrs. Albert De Raad died sixteen years after the death of her husband, on the same date, December 5, in the year of 1956. She was also buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
