The biography of Gerrit Jan Leusink family was gathered for various sources as cited and prepared by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Iowa Genealogical Society.

Gerrit Jan Leusink was a pioneer of the Middleburg community and he was elected to the governing body of the newly formed Middleburg Reformed church on July 31, 1885 as an elder along with J. Dykstra. P. De Zeeuw and Jan Post were deacons. There were about 9 families that formed the first church the ultimately formed the small farm community of Middleburg.

Gerrit Jan Leusink married Hendrika Nijland 1842-1877 on 17 Jun 1866 at Diepenheim OV Neth. They had children – Gerrit Hendrik Leusink 1866-1867, Gerrit Hendrik Leusink 1869-1935, Hendrik Jan Leusink 1873-1956 and Jan Leusink 1876-1954. His wife Hendrika Nijland died before 1879.

Gerrit Jan Leusink then married Grada Visscher born 8 Apr 1852 Ruurlo, Gelderland, Netherlands died 7 Apr 1923 Hull, Iowa; married on 3 Nov 1877 Ruurlo, Gelderland, Netherlands. Grada was the daughter of Gerrit Jan Visschers 1815-1875 and Berendjen Nijland 1824-1856.

2 GERRIT HENDRIK LEUSINK was born 5 May 1869 and died 21 Aug 1935 Orange City IA. Gerrit Leusink, Old Hull Resident Dies – Old Pioneer of Hull died at Home of His Sister at age 66; Funeral Held Tuesday. Gerrit Leusink one of the real old time residents of this vicinity, died at the Doornink hospital at Orange City, last Saturday, following an operation for acute gall bladder trouble. He was taken sick a week ago and was taken to the home of his sister Mrs. Henry Te Grotenhuis, at Hospers, from there he was taken to the hospital at Orange City. Mr. Leusink was a single man, was sixty six years of age and is survived by three sisters: Ms. Martin Vander Sloot of Sioux Center, Mrs. Anthony Bomgaars of Hull and Mrs. Henry Te Grotenhuis of Hospers; and four brothers, John of Marcus Henry of Hull ND, H. D. of hull, and Gerrit John of Lake View SD. On brother Bert, died only five weeks ago. The funeral was held Tuesday in Hull at the First Reformed church. Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating, and burial was made in the family lot at Middleburg. The funeral was largely attended, showing the esteem in which Mr. Leusink was held by all who know him. 3 HENDRIK JAN LEUSINK was born 22 Oct 1873 Ruurlo Neth. died 22 Aug 1956 Sioux Center IA Sioux Center News August 30, 1956. Funeral services for Henry Leusink of Sioux Center, who passed away Wednesday, August 22 were held Monday August 27, with services at the home at 1:00 and 1:30 at the First Reformed Church with Rev. H. Brower officiating. Burial was in the Sioux Center Community Cemetery with Vander Ploeg's Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Steve Vos, Gerrit J. Leusink, Abe Beukelman, William Leusink, Peter Leusink and Gerrit H. Leusink. Mr. Henry Leusink passed away late Wednesday night, at his home. He had reached 82 years and 10 months. Mr. Leusink was born in the Netherlands and came to America when only 8 years old and on February 21, 1907 he was united in marriage to Kate Vis who preceded him in death on February 14, 1953. To this union the following children were born, Henrietta, Mrs. John E. Driesen of Hudson; Peter of Orange City; Hattie of Hull, Gerrit J. of Sioux Center; William of Holland, Minn.; Gertie, Mrs. Abe Beukelman of Sioux Center; Katherine, Mrs. Steve Vos of Sioux Center. One daughter Grace preceded him in death in 1940 and one son John in 1926. He is further survived by one brother and two sisters, H.D. Leusink, and Hattie, Mrs. Tony Bomgaars both of Hull and Johanna, Mrs. Henry Te Groetenhuis of Hospers. Four brothers and one sister preceded him. He is also survived by 33 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren

4 JAN LEUSINK was born May 26, 1876 and died June 1954 Hull Index June 17, 1954 Mr. John Leusink passed away Saturday evening at six o'clock after a long illness. Mr. Leusink had reached the age of 78 years. He was born in the Netherlands on May 26, 1876 and came to America when he was a child. He was married to Jane Van De Hoef in 1911. The couple moved to a farm near Middleburg where they spent most of their life. There were four children born and they are: Gary of Corning, Iowa; Margaret, Mrs. Bernard Krommendyk of Hull; Grace, Mrs. Peter Dykstra of Hull and Eugene of Hull. Surviving besides his wife and children are seven grandchildren of which one grandchild preceded him in death. Two sisters and four brothers also preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the First Reformed Church of Hull with Rev. Peter De Jong of Sioux Center officiating. Internment was made in the Middleburg Cemetery. The Kraai and Van Etten Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

5 HENDRIKUS LEUSINK was Oct 13, 1879 and died Mar 1968 From the Sioux County Index (Hull), March 14, 1968: Hendrikus Leusink Funeral Services Thursday, March 14. Mr. Hendrikus Leusink of Hull passed away Sunday afternoon, March 10, 1968, at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 26 days. He had been in good health until Sunday morning when he apparently suffered a stroke. He was taken to the Orange City hospital, where he died during the afternoon hours. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 14, with a short prayer service at 1:15 p.m. in the basement, and at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Reformed Church of Hull. Rev. David C. Ter Beest will officiate. Special music will be furnished by Mrs. Willis Brouwer and Mrs. Harold Koele singing "God Be With You" and "Sweet By and By," accompanied by Mrs. V. De Jongh. Interment will be made in Hope Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers, namely, Delmar Wesselink, Harlan Wesselink, David Wesselink, John Schoep, Clayton De Jongh and Dennis De Jongh. Kraai Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hendrikus Leusink was born in the Netherlands October 13, 1879. At the age of three years he came to Sioux County where he resided since. Mr. Leusink was united in marriage to Lucy Hymans in 1898. She preceded him in death in 1940. To this union six children were born: Grace, Mrs. Gerrit De Jongh, of Lakewood, Calif.; Dora, Mrs. Dan Wesselink, of Hull; Gerrit John, deceased; Henrietta, Mrs. Jake Van Surksum, of Bellflower, California; Louzina, deceased; and Hyman, deceased. They also had 11 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. On June 4, 1943, Mr. Leusink was united in marriage to Mrs. Ben (Bert) Leusink. She survives, along with nine step children, 34 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Hattie Bomgaars of Orange City and Mrs. Henry Te Grotenhuis of Hospers. Mr. Leusink was engaged in farming for many years, retiring in 1947, when he moved into the town of Hull. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hull, and despite his advanced years, was a very regular attendant.

6 GERTRUDE LEUSINK Gertrude Leusink 1882-1939 Mrs. Vander Sloot Passed Away.
Mrs. Martin Vander Sloot, 55, passed away early Friday morning, at her home, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Vander Sloot was born in Alton, Iowa, on August 24, 1882. She was married to Mr. Vander Sloot at Middleburg on August 9, 1906; eight children were born to them, one child preceded her in death, who died at the age of 2 years. The surviving are the widower and children, Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman of Paullina, Gerrit John of Sheldon, Mrs. Cornie Droog of Grand Rapids, Mich., Martin Jr. Gardie, Joe and Grace Gladys, all of Sioux Center. She also leaves 6 grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters survive her, they are Mr. Henry Leusink of Hull, Mr. John Leusink of Matlock, Mr. Hendrikus Leusink of Hull, Mr. Gerrit J. Leusink of Dorien, Wisc., Mrs. Anthony Bomgaars of Hull, and Mrs. H. W. Te Grotenhuis of Hospers. The past fourteen years she had resided at Sioux Center, Iowa. 7 BERT LEUSINK 1885-1953 Sioux County Index August 23, 1935 Born: 1-29-1885
Died: 8-20-1935 Bert Leusink, one of the pioneers of this section of Sioux County, died at his home northeast of Hull last Friday morning, and was buried in the Middleburg Cemetery Monday afternoon. Mr. Leusink was fifty years old and was married twenty eight years ago to Miss Jennie Mouw. To this union eight children were born, two dying in infancy. Besides his wife and six children he is survived by five brothers and three sisters, and six grandchildren. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

Translated:Saturday a daughter of G. J. Leusink, in Middleburg, died at the age of 3 years and 9 months. The funeral took place on Tuesday, on which occasion Rev. A. Zwemer gave a speech.

Died: June 19, 1971 Mrs. Anthony Bomgaars, 81, formerly of Hull, Iowa, died June 19, hospital at Orange City. The funeral was at 1:30 P.M. June 22, at the First Reformed Church, Hull, the Reverend David Ter Best officiated and burial was at Oak Cemetery. The Kraai Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Former Hattie Leusink, was born July 2, 1889. Her husband died 1946. They lived at Orange City Nursing Home this past year. Survivors: three daughters, Mrs. Jake (Margaret) Doorenbos and Mrs. Gerrit (Clazine) J. Scholen, both of Boyden, and Mrs. Adrian (Grace) Burman of Orange City; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

10 JOHANNA LEUSINK 1891-1970 Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Hospers July 6 for Mrs. Henry (Johanna) Grotenhuis, 91, of Hospers, who died July 2 at the Orange City hospital of a heart ailment. Burial was made at Hospers. Mrs. Grotenhuis was born at Middleburg August 19, 1891. Survivors include two daughters, Hendrena, at home, and Mrs. Peter (Grace) Boekhout of Little Rock; a son, William, of Wheaton, Ill.; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Bomgaars, of Orange City. 11 GERRIT JOHN LEUSINK was born 25 Jul 1894 and died 3 Dec 1953 Clinton Rock Co. Wisconsin. Wife was Hattie Koele 1897 Hull IA -1963 Clinton WI Source Find A. Grave. Children – Gerald John Leusink 1924-2001; Janet Arlene Leusink 1926-2006, Harlan Henry Leusink 1933-2012; Joyce M. Leusink 1938-2012 and one other listed as private.

OBITUARIES of Gerrit Jan Leusink and wife Grada Visscher were rather short. Middleburg was sort of inbetween towns that had newspapers and the death notices were usually put in the correspondence section of the papers and were not very informational as to the life of the individual.

Alton Democrat of Feb 26, 1910 G. J. Leusink of Middleburg vicinity died Saturday evening. Mr. Lensink was troubled with asthma for several years and it was worse this winter till Saturday evening when death came to end his suffering. He was sixty nine years old and leaves a widow and six sons and three daughters. The funeral was Wednesday.

Mrs. G. L (J.) Leusink of Hull died from heart failure April 7th. Her heart seemed to have failed her when she became frightened by a hail storm, which had come up suddenly during the night. She was nervous from that time until her death early in the morning.
