Chenhall, John Truran 1860-1950 and Avis Keen Family

This story was taken from page 368 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

John Turin Chenhall was born Apr. 20, 1860 and died Nov. 1950. Avis Keen Chenhall was born Dec. 19, 1862 and died June, 1950.

John T. Chenhall and Avis Keen were married June 14, 1888 in Monroe, Wi. in her family home. They lived with his parents for one year, before going to live in Maryville, Mo. where their 3 children were born: Edith, Sept. 15, 1889; Alta, Jan. 13, 1893; and Raymond, June 23, 1897.

John and Avis moved to his father’s, Stephen Chenhall, farm in Reading Twp. Sioux County Iowa in 1905 and lived on the Chenhall farm until 1918 when they moved into Ireton. At this time their son, Raymond and wife Lillian Clark Chenhall moved onto the family farm. Raymond remained on the farm until 1928, at which time they moved to San Diego, Ca.

The Chenhall farm was rented for 4 years after which John Chenhall’s daughter, Edith Van Skike, and two sons, Delbert and Hubert, have operated it since.

John Truman Chenhall was born 20 Apr 1860 Mineral Point, Iowa, Wisconsin and died 23 Nov 1950 at San Diego, CA. He was the son of Stephen Charles W. Chenhall 1824-1903 and Jane Truran 1832-1903. He was married Jun 14, 1888 at Monroe Green, Wisconsin, to Avis C. Keen born 19 Dec 1862 Wisconsin, and died 18 Jun 1950 San Diego, CA. Her parents were Joseph Keen 1831-1915 and Rebecca born 1838.

CHILDREN of John and Avis Chenhall:

1. EDITH CHENHALL born 15 Sep 1889 Polk, Noraway County, Missouri died 9 Jan 1982 Ireton Iowa. She married Nehemiah Van Skike. Two children were listed – Delbert Van Skike 1921-2008 and Hubert Van Skike 1922-2010.

Mrs. Edith L. Van Skike, 92, of Ireton, died Friday, Jan. 1 in a hospital at Orange City. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church at Ireton. The Rev. Marion Bloodworth officiated. Burial was at a later date. The Mauer Funeral Home of Le Mars was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Van Skike, the former Edith L. Chenhall, was born Sept. 15, 1889, at Marysville, Mo. She was a longtime resident of Sioux County. Survivors include four sons, William N. of Houston, Texas, John T. of Santa Rosa, Calif.. Delbert L. and Hubert L., both of Ireton; one daughter, Mrs. Mary M. Jinks of Bangor, Maine; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond of San Diego, Calif.

2. ALTA MAY CHENHALL born 13 Jan 1893 Missouri, and died 6 Oct 1977 La Mesa, San Diego Co. CA. She married Earl C. Faringer born abt 1891 IA. Their children were – Maya Lucile Ramsey 1915-2002, Orville A. Faringer 1917, Mildred I. Faringer 1919.

3. RAYMOND CHENHALL born 15 Jun 1896 Bedison, Missouri, Boone, Missouri and died 15 Oct 1984 Table Grove Fulton IL. He married Lillian Georgia Clark 1895-1956 and listed children – Robert Gene Chenhall 1923-2002, Lida Marie Chenhall 1926-2000. Two other spouses were listed.

John Chenhall Dies at Age 90 In California Ireton, la.—John T. Chenhall, 90, former Ireton resident, died at his home in San Diego, Calf., on Thnrsday noon, November 28. He had been in poor health for some time prior to his death. Mr. Chenhall had been a prominent farmer living southeast of Ireton for some time, and later moved to San Diego. Survivors are three children, Mrs. Edith Van Skike of Ireton, Mrs. Alto Farringer and Raymond Chenhall of San Diego. Mrs. Chenhall died several months ago

Former Ireton Resident Dies Ireton, la.-—Mrs. John Chenhal!, formerly of Ireton, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. C. Farringer, Sunday morning, June 18. She is survived .by her husband, John Chenhall, a son, R. E. Chenhall; two daughters, Mrs. E. C. Farringer and Mrs. Edith Van Skike; eleven grandchildren and other relatives. Mrs. Chenhall has lived in California. Previously, however, she lived on the Chenhall farm southeast of Ireton and later in Ireton
