Braskamp, Johannes ‘John’ Hendrikus 1842-1920 & Maria Elisabeth Jillisse Family

There are several good books that describe the early life and times of the pioneers that settled in Sioux county; including ‘The Story of Sioux County’ by Charles Dyke; ‘Siouxland A History of Sioux County’ by Nelson Nieuwenhuis and the Alton Centennial book of 1883-1983.

Johannes Henderikus Brascamp was born 28 Jn 1841 Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands and died 1920 Sioux County IA. He was the son of Bernardus Gozenwijn Braskamp 1812 and Johanna Louisa Landall. He married Maria Elisabeth Jillese on 25 May 1870.

Maria Elisabeth Jillese was born Dec 1841 The Hague, S-Granvenhage, Zuid Holland, Netherlands and died 27 Mar 1923 Nassau Township Sioux County Iowa. From her marriage record of 25 May 1870 Amsterdam, her parents are listed as Simon Jillese and Elisabeth de Klerk.

THEIR CHILDREN:
1. John Bernardus Braskamp born 10 Mar 1871 Holland died 8 Dec 1946 Alton IA buried there. His wife was Caroline Amelia Hanson married 24 Apr 1923 Beadle SD. Sioux County Capital of Dec 12, 1946 John Bertus Braskamp was born March 10 1871 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. At the age of eleven, in 1882, he came to America with his parents, and they located in Alton. He lived here for more than 64 years, and was employed by the railroad company for 35 years. He had charge of the pump station until about five years ago when he retired. Mrs. Braskamp had been in failing health for some time, and had suffered several heart attacks. He died suddenly Sunday morning December 8, of a blood clot near the heart. He was 76 years old. April 23, 1923 he was united in marriage to Carrie Hanson of Canton, SD. She survives him, as also two sisters, Miss Marie Braskamp of Alton and Mrs. John Niewhuis, formerly of Hospers but now of Mission TX and two brothers, Sam of Mission, TX and Will of Aberdeen SD. Funeral services were held this Wednesday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church, with Rev. H. Eggink officiating.

2. Samuel Lawrence Braskamp born 5 May 1873 Amsterdam, Noord Holland, Netherlands died 4 Feb 1948 at Mission, Hidalgo, Texas. He married Mabel ‘Hannah’ Waterman 1879-1949, and they had children- Glenwood Burdette Braskamp 1897-1974, Charles Burnett Braskamp 1903-1985, Leon Herbert Braskamp 1907-1991, and Eva M. Braskamp 1916-1992.

3. Marie E. Braskamp born about 9 Jan 1875 Amsterdam Netherlands died Feb 1960 Iowa buried Alton IA She was single. See her lengthy obituary on our page at http://iagenweb.org/boards/sioux/obituaries/index.cgi?review=627874

4. Albert Braskamp born 4 Sep 1876 Amsterdam Holland died Oct 30, 1939 Los Angeles CA buried in Nassau Tsp Cemetery Alton IA. He apparently was not married. Sioux County Capital of Sep 5, 1940 AL BRASKAMP A short service was held at the Nassau township cemetery Saturday afternoon for Al Braskamp who died October 30, 1939. The body was cremated in California where Mr. Braskamp has lived for many years. The remains were sent to Alton relatives and burial was postponed until such a time when the family could get together. Mr. and .Mrs. Will Braskamp of Huron, S. D. were purpose and Alton here for the relatives are Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Braskamp and Miss Marie Braskamp, Mrs. John Nieuwenhuis a sister of Hospers and Sam Braskamp of Mission, Texas were unable to attend. The service was in charge of Rev. Mr. S. A. Munneke

5. Jan Willem ‘William’ Braskamp born 1 Jan 1879 Amsterdam, Holland died 1961 Huron SD He married on 13 Dec 14 at Monona IA to Josie D. Rearick 1892 One child was listed as Lois Elizabeth Braskamp 1915-1964.

6.Elizabeth Braskamp born 21 Feb 1882 Amsterdam, Holland. She married Arent J. Niewenhuis. Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Hospers at 10 A.M., September 7 for Mrs. A. J. Nieuwenhuis, 92, of Hospers, who died at the Plymouth Manor nursing home in LeMars September 6. Services were conducted by the Rev. Henry J. Vermeer and burial was in the Hospers cemetery.Mrs. Nieuwenhuis, the former Elizabeth Braskamp, was born February 21, 1882, in The Netherlands. She came to America as a small child with her parents. She was married June 28, 1904, at Alton. Mr. Nieuwenhuis died Jan. 25, 1947.Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. M. J. (Ramona) Heusinkveld of Nevada, and Mrs. D. H. (Marlys) Peterson of Sioux City; one son, Lesley, of Mead, Nebr.; three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Source: Sioux Center News, September 11, 1974

His Find A Grave.com page gives his birth date as 28 Jan 1841 in Amsterdam; wife Maria Elisabeth Jillisse Braskamp, 1842-1923.

The 1900 U.S. census for Alton, Iowa shows him as John U. Braskamp, age 60, born Jan 1840 in Holland, immigrated in 1882, naturalized, a carpenter, married 30 years; wife Mary E., age 58, born Dec 1841 in Holland, immigrated 1882. Subsequent census records and birth and marriage records for his children also spell the family surname Braskamp.

OBITUARY of Johannes ‘John’ Hendrikus Braskamp
From the Hospers Tribune, July 2, 1920:
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Nieuwenhuis and children were at Alton on Tuesday to attend the funeral of her father, Mr. John Braskamp, who died Sunday after a brief illness, aged 79 years. Rev. Fulcomer had charge of the services. Mr. Braskamp was well known and liked throughout this vicinity. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their loss.

From the Alton Democrat, July 3, 1920:
LONG TIME ALTON RESIDENT PASSES ON John H. Braskamp, a respected citizen of Alton since the year 1881, passed to his reward last Sunday at the age of 79 years. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Presbyterian church with Rev. Geo. M. W. Fulcomer officiating at 3 P.M. and interment took place at the Nassau township cemetery. A large number paid their last respects to a valued and respected friend.
Mr. Braskamp was born at Appeldoorn, Netherlands, on January 28, 1841. He was married to Miss Marie Jellia at Amsterdam on May 25, 1870, and the wedding took place at the same time as 25 other couples were being married in the same church. They came to America and to Alton in 1881 and have lived here ever since. The wife and six children survive, as follows.
J. B. and Al of Alton; Sam of Mission, Texas; Marie of Sioux City; Will of Huron, S.D.; and Mrs. Bessie Nieuwenhuis of Hospers. All were present at the funeral with the exception of Sam who could not leave his farm in Texas at this time. The following brothers also survive: W. Braskamp, the Netherlands and A. M. Braskamp, Alton.
Those present at the funeral from away were Mrs. Lennon, Mrs. Green, Mr. Sargisson and Henry Ketel, a nephew of Stickney, S.D. The deep sympathy of the community goes out to the bereaved ones.

OBITUARY of Maria (Mrs. John H. Braskamp)
Alton Democrat of March 31st 1923 (Their is a picture of Marie Mrs. J. H. Braskamp on the front page of issue. No other picture was located for the family Mrs. J. H. Braskamp passes on. Funeral Held at Alton This Friday Afternoon – was 82 years old. Mrs. J. H. Braskamp (nee’ Jillise) passed away at her home on Alton Monday at 7:30 o’clock. The end came suddenly and was a shock to her many Alton Friends. The funeral was held this Friday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, Rev. George Bray officiating at 2 o’clock. All of the children, except Albert of Glendale CA were present for the funeral, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Braskamp of Mission TA arriving Thurday night.
Mrs. Braskamp was born in the Netherlands,Dec 29, 1841. On the 25th of May 1870 she was married to Mr. Braskamp and they came to this country in June of 1882, locating at Alton. One sister survives in Amsterdam the Netherlands.
All of the six children born to them are living, respected, prosperous citizens. They are John H. of Alton, Samuel of Mission TX, Miss Marie of Alton, Albert of Glendale CA, Wm. of Huron and Mrs. Bessie Nieuwenhuis of Hospers, who have the heartfelt sympathy of the host of friends in their great loss.
