This BIOS narrative was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Iowa Genealogical Society. See H. W. Braaks’ obituary further down this narrative for more biographical accounts of his life.

There are several good books that describe the early life and times of the pioneers that settled in Sioux county; including ‘The Story of Sioux County’ by Charles Dyke; ‘Siouxland A History of Sioux County’ by Nelson Nieuwenhuis and the ‘Ireton Centennial book of 1882-1982’. Also refer to the BIOS of their son Henry Braaks 1881-1962 for more information.

OBITUARY of H. W. Braaks 1845-1923

H. W. Braaks, one of the early day residents of Ireton, passed away at his home here last Friday after an illness of several months, during the last fourteen weeks of which he was bedfast. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Ireton, Monday afternoon, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. E. Rich, Schmidt, and interment was made in the Ireton cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives, friends and neighbors of the deceased and the business houses of Ireton were closed during the funeral hour as a mark of respect to his memory.

Habbe Wiards Braaks, was born at Pewsum, Ostfriesland, Germany on July 13, 1845, and died at Ireton, Iowa, July 6, 1923, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 23 days. He was born in a Christian home and was given that kind of training, being brought up in the Lutheran faith in which he was confirmed at the conventional age. At the age of fourteen he became an apprentice in his father's blacksmith shop and worked at the trade until he entered the military service of his country under the Hannoverian government. In 1866 the year after the close of our own Civil War, there was war on the European continent with Prussia on the one side and Austria, Hanover, Saxony and the provinces of southern Germany on the other.
NOTE: There is a long listing of all the places that he served)
At the conclusion of the war Mr. Braaks again returned to his blacksmith shop and soon entered into holy wedlock with Caroline Friederike Rohmann. This union was blessed with three children, the third child dying in early infancy. On May 15, 1878, Mr. Braaks was bereft of his wife and the small children of their mother. These indeed were days of sore trial. In 1881 he entered into a second marriage with Hinderkje Alberts. This union was blessed with seven children, three sons and four daughters. One son, Louis Braaks, died in 1904.
In 1887 the family emigrated to America, arriving in Ireton on May 28th of that year. They made their home on a farm for three months and then, upon the suggestion and encouragement of friends, the father took up his old trade in Ireton establishing a blacksmith shop with a few adjoining living rooms on Main Street where the Security Savings Bank now stands.
This business and home was destroyed by fire, he was encouraged to rebuild another shop and home. He worked here for another 22 years and retired, his sons Henry & Carl established the firm of Braaks Bros.
During the last year Grandfather Braaks had been ailing. From Christmas until Easter he was up and down, feeling a little stronger one day, a little weaker the next. On Easter Sunday he attended church the last time and also partook of Holy Communion. Soon after his appetite failed him, entirely and from day to day he grew visibly weaker until last Friday when he fell quietly to sleep in full faith and trust in Good, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, and 8 children; Mrs. C. H. Kluter of Ireton, Mrs. Wm. Marienau of Truman, MN; Mrs. Clarence Edwards of Nortonville, MN; Henry Braaks of Ireton, Mrs. Andrew Johnson of Hartford, SD; and Carl, Agatha and Sophia Braaks of Ireton. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Fred Gruennagel of Chatsworth, besides 35 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, a host of friends and the local Lutheran congregation of which he was one of the early members. All of his children, with the exception of Mrs. Clarence Edwards were present at the funeral.
