Barents, John 1886-1956 and Jennie Levering Family

This story was taken from page 359 of the Ireton Centennial Book (1882-1982). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

Mr. John Barents left Holland when seventeen years of age. He sailed the Seven Seas as a Merchant Marine, and also sailed in the boat of Fourteen Mast. This boat was used to transport iron ore in 1903. He came to America at the age of twenty-five and settled in the Sioux Co. area. He married Jennie Levering at Doon, Ia. in the year of 1914.

To this union six children were born: Gerrit of Ireton, John of Fulda, Mn., Julius of Ireton, Edward who is deceased (1978), Jacoba Nelsen of Yakima, Wa., and Marie Walraven of Hills, Mn.

Mr. Barents was a farm hand in their earlier years of marriage and worked on the railroad tracks running through Ireton in his later years. He passed away in the year 1956 at the age of 69. Mrs. Barents passed away in the year of 1949 at the age of 55. Both are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton.

The Barents Sea, an arm of the Arctic Ocean north of Norway and Russia, was discovered by William Barents, who is an ancestor of John Barents.

Jan ‘John’ Barents was born 3 April 1866 Rotterdam, Zuid Holland, Netherlands and died 28 May 1956 Ireton IA. His parents were Gerrit Barents 1857-1915 and Maria Johanna Van Hieshout 1858-1902. He married Jennie Levering on 14 Apr 1914 Lyon County IA.

Jentje ‘Jennie’ Levering was born 28 Jan 1894 Middleburg Sioux Iowa and died 27 Feb 1949 Ireton IA. She was the daughter of Jillis Julius Levering 1861-1931 and Jacob Ruth Roetman 1867-1931.

Children listed were:

1. Gerrit ‘Gary’ Barents born 17 Nov 1915 IA died Jul 1984 Ireton IA. He married Loucella Ver Hoeven. They had two sons Vernon and Darrell.
2. John Barents Jr. born 5 Aug 1917 Larchwood Lyon Iowa died 12 Mar 2004 Fulda MN. He married Jeanette Meyer 1923-1993. Child listed: Diane 1950-1994
3. Julius Barents born 3 Oct 1918 Larchwood Lyon IA died 13 Aug 1998 Ireton IA. He married Ade Ten Napel she died 2017
4. Edward Barents born 8 Jan 1920 Larchwood Lyon IA died 21 May 1978 Everly Clay Iowa. His wife was Alberta born 1925 died 1987 Everly IA
5. Jacoba Marije Barents born 18 Apr 1921 Ireton IA died 25 Apr 2000 Arcada, CA. She was Mrs. William Nelson.
6. Marie Barents born 1922 Ireton IA. Married 5 Oct 1943 to Henry Walraven.

OBITUARY OF JOHN BARENTS
John Barents, Sr., Dies at Ireton
Ireton, Ia. -- John Barents, sr., 70, died Monday of a heart attack at the home of a son, Julius, where he had been residing.
Mr. Barents, who was retired, had lived in Ireton about 35 years. He at one time operated a rendering plant in that town.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Coba Mills of Arcata, Calif., and Mrs. Henry Walraven of Hills, Minn.; three sons, Edward of Sanborn, Gerrit and Julius, both of Ireton, and 16 grandchildren. Mrs. Barents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at the Methodist church with Rev. Howard Hanko and Rev. Lois Payne officiating. Burial will be in the Ireton cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gerrit Barents, John Barents, Edward Barents, Julius Barents, Henry Walraven and Lambert Levering.

John Barents Sr. Dies at Ireton
IRETON--Mr. John Barents, sr., died at the home of his son, Julius in Ireton Monday, May 28, following a heart attack. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Mr. Barents was born in Rotterdam, Holland, April 3, 1886, and came to the U.S. when 22 years of age after working seven years on a merchant ship.
April 14, 1914, he was united in marriage to Jennie Levering. She died four years ago. Surviving are four sons, Julius and Gerrit of Ireton, Edward of Sanborn and John jr. of Fulda, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Jacoba Mills of Arcata, Calif., and Mrs. Henry Walraven of Hills, Minn. There are 15 grandchildren.

OBITUARY OF JENNIE BARENTS
Ireton: Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon for Mrs. John Barents, 55 years old, from the Methodist church, Rev. E. J. Plummer officiating with burial in the Ireton cemetery. Mrs. Barents died Sunday evening at five o'clock at the home of her son Julius Barents and family, where she was taken after being a patient in the Sacred Heart hospital, LeMars, a short time following a stroke, paralyzing parts of her upper body.
Mrs. Barents, the former Jennie Levering, leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, John Barents, two daughters and four sons, who are: Mrs. Henry Walraven, Gerrit, Edward and Julius Barents of Ireton, Miss Jacoba Barents of Eureka, Calif. and John Barents jr. of Fulda, Minn., also six grandchildren.

Mrs. John Barents
Jennie Lovering [i.e., Levering], daughter of Julius and Jacoba Levering, was born Jan. 28, 1894 at Middleburg, Iowa and was married to John Barents April 14, 1914 and to this union six children were born, Miss Jacoba of Eureka, Calif., Mrs. Marie Walraven, Edward, Julius and Gerrit Barents of Ireton and John, Jr., of Fulda, Minn. She had spent most of her life in Sioux county with the exception of four years spent at Hudson, S.D. She was a member of the Methodist church and a willing worker of the Ladies Aid Society.
She died Sunday, Feb. 27th at the home of her son Julius and family following an illness of two months. Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the Methodist church at 2 o'clock with Rev. E. J. Plummer of Marcus officiating with interment in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Pall-bearers were Wm. Wissink, Henry Krommendyk, Ed Van Donge, Albert Sprik, Dick Dirksen and Pete Santema.
Survivors are the widower, the six children, and six grandchildren. Also three brothers, Lambert Levering of Sheldon, Edward Levering of Grand Rapids, Mich., and John Levering of Doon, all present for the services.
