Bloemendaal, Evert J. G. 1838-1920 & Johanna Ten Cate Families

Evert Jan Gerhard Bloemendaal was born 18 Apr 1838 Veldwijk Gelderland Netherlands to Roelof Bloemendaal age 30 and Hendrika Rouwenhorst age 21.

Johanna Ten Cate was born 11 Aug 1852 Beekbergen Gelderland Netherlands and died 27 Feb 1931 Orange City IA. Parents were Jan Hendrik Ten Cate 1815-1881 and Gertje Van Oorspronk 1824-1907.

PUZZLING QUESTION – Why is Johanna referred to as Johanna Van Ek and Johanna Ten Cate/Kate?? In her obit she is Johanna Van Ek. In the obit notice for Evert in the De Volksvriend it states his wife was Johanna Ten Cate. In Evert’s obit in the Alton paper it stated he married Johanna Van Ek, but the marriage record states Ten Cate. Some of the children refer to their mother in their obits as Johanna Ten Cate and some Johanna Van Ek. Her surviving brother was Herman Ten Cate. Where does the Van Ek come in at? The submitter checked for previous and later marriage of Johanna to a Van Ek, none found, this is very confusing, anyone having the answer to this mystery, please contact our page coordinator to explain.

Marriage record of Evert Bloemendaal 32 of Orange City IA to Johanna Ten Kate age 19, born Netherlands on July 23, 1872 in Fillmore Allegan, Michigan.

**INSERT –
Evert came to America in 1867 – America was called the land of
opportunity. Some villagers (in Holland) raised conscientious
objections, thinking going to America was like unto taking off into
space. His parents were not if favor of his leaving. Many said “if
I can earn my bread here, I will not go to America to have it
buttered” to which E J. G. replied, A man who is satisfied with
bread minus butter, is a thankful creature, but I consider bread even
better when it is buttered.” He said the Lord who controls all
things opened the way for me.
And so he sailed to America. The ship sailed across the Atlantic to
the St. Lawrence river into Canada, then traveled by train down to
Michigan and Wisconsin, visiting Holland colonies and then into NW
Iowa.
He built a sod house beside the Floyd River in Floyd Township. The
land bought at this time was $7. per acre. After a few years he went
back to visit family in Holland, on the return trip the ship was
wrecked and sunk in the North Sea.
(They must have survived in life boats! Dorothy mentioned a legend
handed down in the family that Evert went down in the hold of the
doomed ship to see they all were out, and found a maiden on her knees
praying and was rescued. Later it was thought that she became his
bride in Michigan!)
In 1911, he wrote a book entitled “My America” encouraging more
Hollanders considering immigrating to America.
When Orange City Colony was 25 years old there was a big anniversary
celebration and E. J. G. as one of the oldest NW Iowas Settlers, was
honored by wearing a green ribbon.**

See the obit of Johanna, Mrs. Evert Bloemendaal for a description of the life and times of the Bloemendaal family.

OBITUARY OF Johanna Van Ek (TEN CATE ??) Bloemendaal 1852-1931.  Source: Alton Democrat (3-6-1931) Birth: August, 1852 Death: February 27, 1931
Another of the early pioneers of the county, one of those hardy souls who came here in the early seventies and stayed throughout the grasshopper scourges, the winter blizzards that swept the prairies, the prairie fires, years when there was little to eat for man or beast and such fuel as there was could only be obtained by hauling such wood as could be obtained from along the river and creeks, corn cob, even straw, - anything that would burn - to keep the freezing cold out of the shack - is gone. Mrs. E.J.G. Bloemendaal died at an the Orange City Hospital last Thursday following an operation. Peritonitis set in and after five days the end came.
Johanna Van Ek was born in the Netherlands August 1852, coming to the United State at the age of 20. She was married to Mr. E.J.G. Bloemendaal at Holland, Michigan on July 23, 1872, and the same year they set out for the west to create their own home in a new country.
They took up a homestead in 1872 three miles north of Alton, and here twelve children were born, one dying in infancy. As an opportunity came they acquired more and more land and upon the death of Mr. Bloemendaal some years ago each one of the surviving eleven children was the owner of a good Sioux County farm, all of them being located within a few miles of the old homestead.
The children who mourn the loss of their mother are John and Henry of Alton; Joe, Gerrit and Ralph of Orange City; William of Hospers; James of Alton; Mrs. William Scholten of Orange City; Mrs. William Van Surksum and Mrs. John Vander Wilt of Hospers, and Mrs. William Van Steenwyk of Alton.
In addition she is survived by 47 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother also survive the Sioux County pioneer, as follows: Mrs. Ben Huizenga of Holland, Michigan, Herman Ten Cate of Edgerton, Minnesota, and Mrs. Dick Hiemstra, also of Edgerton.
The funeral services at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City Monday afternoon were attended by a vast concourse of people. Short services were held first at the William Scholten home. Dr. R. Bronkema, pastor of the Church, and Reverend G.W. Hylkema, pastor of the Second Christian Reformed Church, conducted the services. Burial was at the Orange City Cemetery.
