This BIOS for the John Perlot family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Their family information and stories of the life and times of those pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk give a very colorful account of pioneer life with it joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis gives a great historical account of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County.

John Peter Perlot born 3 Sep 1834 at Kehlen, Capellen Luxembourg died 11 Oct 1912 at Denver CO buried in Wheatridge CO. His parents were Michael Perlo Perlot 1800-1880 and Margaret Poeckes 1795-1861. He came to the states in 1866. He married Marguerite Theis 1852-1932 in 1869 at Iowa City Wright Iowa It appears the family lived in Sioux County until about 1898 when the parents moved to Colorado.

Marguerite Theis was born 21 Feb 1851 Kehlen Capellen Luxembourg died 21 Dec 1932 Denver CO.
Her parents were Henry Theis born 22 Aug 1822 Kehlen Capellen Luxembourg and died 19 Oct 1892 Sioux County IA and Anna Maria Scheltgen born 12 Feb 1823 Schifflingen Alzette, Luxembourg died 21 Aug 1876 Hospers IA.

2. Peter A. Perlot born 14 Aug 1873 Hospers IA died 13 Jul 1912 Wheat Ridge, CO. Find a Grave doesn’t list a wife or family. California death index lists a Peter A. Perlot born about 1872 died 12 Jul 1912 Los Angles. 1880 census of Floyd Sioux County Peter was 6 years living with parents. 1910 census he was single living in Nevada.
3. Michael Henry Perlot born 17 Mar 1876 Hospers, Iowa died 27 Oct 1956 Iowa City IA. Buried in St. Joseph’s cemetery Granville IA. Find A Grave lists his wife as Mary Haupert married 22 May 1898, and two children
4. Kathryn Perlot born Dec 1878 Iowa died 1975 Denver CO Colorado Marriages listed Kathryn Perlot married 22 Aug 1903 to Edgar Twining Butler 1869-1936 , and later a Nelson Two children listed.
5. Margeurite Perlot born 19 Feb 1882/1883 Sioux County IA died 24 Dec 1964 Denver CO. She was single. See her obit below.
6. John F. Perlot born 6 Apr 1885 Iowa died 5 May 1906 Denver CO. see his obit below.

RESEARCH NOTES:

From the Church book of St. Mary’s Catholic Church page 196 in the story of Mathew Perlot Family:
John P. Perlot, originally from Ardennes, France, and his 16 year old bride, Margaret Theis came to northwest Iowa with a caravan from Jackson County, Iowa in May 1870. they settled on a farm south of Granville, adjoining the farm settled by the Harens family. They built their sod homes back to back and had an adjoining well between them, until they were able to build something more suitable. The Perlot’s fist child, Mathew, was born in the home March 3, 1871. He was said to be the first white boy born in the settlement of Luxemburg descendants who came to Sioux County from eastern Iowa.

In 1870 Mr. and Mrs John P. Perlot came in a caravan by oxen from Jackson County Iowa, and homesteaded the farm, 1 mile west and 1 and ¼ miles north of Granville, and it has been in the Perlot name ever since – Alton Democrat of Sep 2, 1965,

In 1870 Mr. Koolbeek said the first houses in Floyd township were built in the fall of 18708 by Math Harens and John Perlot. The lumber was hauled from Le Mars The first child born in the German settlement was Math Perlot, son of John Perlot - Alton Democrat of 2/18/195_

The 1880 U.S. census shows the Perlot family living in Floyd Township, Sioux County: John, age 44, a farmer, born in Luxemburg; wife Margereth, age 27, also born in Luxemburg; children Mathew (9), Peter (6), Michel (4), and Kate (3), all born in Iowa.

In the 1885 Iowa state census they still lived in rural Floyd Township. Their children are Mathias (13), Peter (11), Michael (8), Katherina (7), and Margaret (2). Also living with them is Henry Theis, age 62, widowed, a carpenter.

In 1900 they are living in Denver (although John’s occupation is still farmer): John P. Perlot, age 64, born Sept. 1835 in Germany, married 31 years, immigrated 1866, naturalized; wife Margurett, age 48, born Feb. 1852 in Germany, mother of 6 children, 6 living, immigrated 1855; daughter Catherine, age 21, born Dec. 1878, single, a teacher; daughter Margurete, age 17, born Feb. 1883, at school; son John F., age 15, born April 1885, a salesman in a store; and two female lodgers, Mary E. (age 60) and Mary (age 20) Baumes.

In 1910 John P. (75) and Margaret (58), both born in Germany, are living in Denver with their daughter Marguerite M. (28). John is listed as a farmer, own income, and Marguerite M. as a shirtwaist maker, working at home. Five of John P. and Margaret’s six children are living.

In 1920 Margaret (67), now a widow, born in Luxemburg, native language French, immigrated in 1855 and naturalized in 1893, is living with her daughter Marguerite M. (37). Margaret owns her home. Neither has an occupation. In 1930 they are still living together in Denver.

Word has been received that Peter (John Peter) Perlot of Denver CO died at his home This week. Death was due principally to old age and Mr. Perlot has been feeble for some time. His son, Mike Perlot left Monday to attend the funeral.

OBITUARY of Mrs. Margaret Theis Mrs. John Perlot From the Alton Democrat, Dec 30, 1932: Mrs. Perlot Early Resident Here Mrs. Margaret Perlot, who recently passed on at her home in Denver, was a pioneer resident of this county and still owns a farm east of Alton. For the past 34 years she had been a resident of Denver. She was 81 years of age. Mrs. Perlot is survived by two sons, Mat. Perlot of Alton, Mike H. of Granville, and two daughters, Miss Margaret Perlot and Mrs. Katherine Butler, both of Denver. The two sons and Mrs. Perlot’s brother, John Theis of Hospers, left by train Thursday to attend the funeral, which was held Saturday morning. Mrs. Perlot came to Sioux county by covered wagon at the age of 16, her parents having been among the first settlers of the county. Her son, Matt Perlot of Alton, is said to have been the first white boy born in the county.

OBITUARY of MATHEW PERLOT 1871-1954 Source: Alton Democrat (10-14-1954) Born: March 3, 1871 Died: 1954 Funeral services for Mathew Perlot, pioneer Alton builder were held Wednesday, October 6th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Reverend Z. Reising officiating and Reverend Arnold Ahlers of Laurens assisting at the Mass. Mathew is the son of John P. & Margaretha (Theis) Perlot. He was married Elizabeth Haupert on February 12 at St. Joseph Church in Granville, Iowa. Mathew and Elizabeth are the parents of: Olivia Marie, Odilo M., Viola P., and Leonard. Pallbearers were Paul Von Arb, George Henrich, Nick Gaul, Chris Schneider, Ed Schlichte and Frank Vortherms. Acolytes were Edward Kettler, Tom Schneider, Jim Gaul and Jim Forkenbrock. Surviving Mr. Perlot are his wife and three children: Mrs. O.P. Kettler, Alton, Mrs. John Hellberg, Oregon City, Oregon, and Leonard F., Portland, Oregon; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Mr. H. Perlot, Granville, and two sisters: Mrs. Kathryn Nelson and Miss Marguerite Perlot both of Denver, Colorado. Two sons died in infancy and two brothers John and Pete, preceded in death.
OBITUARY of MICHAEL PERLOT 1876-1956 Source: Alton Democrat (11-15-1956) Born: March 17, 1876 Died: October 27, 1956 Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10:00 o’clock at St. Joseph Church, Granville, Reverend N.J. Becker officiating for Michael H. Perlot, one of the oldest businessmen of Granville. Mr. Perlot owned and operated Perlot’s Café since 1911. He died suddenly Wdnesday eveining, October 27 from a heart attack. Michael H. Perlot was born March 17, 1876, son of John P. and Marguerite (Theis) Perlot, on a farm northwest of Granville, where he resided until his parents moved to Le Mars, where he was employed in the Gehlen Mill. On November 22, 1898 he was married to Mary Haupert at St. Mary’s Church, Alton, and began farming on the Haupert farm, southwest of Granville where they resided until November 14, 1911, then moved to Granville and began operating their business. Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Irene Koob, one son, LeRoy Perlot, both of Granville, two grandchildren, Mrs. Darold Menke of Granville and Robert Lee Perlot of Fort Huachuca, Arizona and four great-grandchildren: Dennis, Bonita, Jacquelyn and Barbara Menke, all of Granville.

OBITUARY of Miss MARGUERITE PERLOT died Dec 26, 1964 THE ALTON DEMOCRAT THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1964 GRANVILLE GAZETTE FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN DENVER Funeral services were held at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Denver, Colo, for Miss Marguerite Perlot, 80, who passed away Saturday, Dec. 26: She was born Feb. 19, 1884, on the Perlot Homestead north of Granville, daughter of J. P. and Margaret Theis Perlot, attended St. Joseph’s School until she moved with her parents to Le Mars, where they resided for several years before moving to Denver, Colo, where she since resided. Surviving; arc one sister, Mrs. Kathryn Nelson of Denver, Colo., one sister-in law, Mrs. Mary Perlot of Granville; three nieces and four nephews: Mrs. John Hellberg of West Linn OR., . Leonard Perlot of Portland OR, . Dr. Jordan Butler of Warwick Neck RI., Mrs. O. P. Kettler of Alton , Atty Lansford Butler of Denver, Iowa, LeRoy Perlot and Mrs. Irene Koob of Granville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Matt Perlot of Alton, Mike of Granville, Pete of San Francisco, Calif., John of Denver. Colo. Burial was in the family lot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Denver.

Word comes from Denver Colorado that John—the youngest son of J. P. Perlot formerly of this vicinity—died suddenly of heart failure May fifth at his home in that city. Deceased was twenty one years old and of happy disposition and leaves many friends and relatives to mourn his loss.
