This BIOS for the Nicolas Hastert family was compiled by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Stories of the life and times of the pioneers can be read about in several Sioux County Books. “The Story of Sioux County” by Charles Dyk give a very colorful account of pioneer life with it's joys and hardships. The book “Siouxland A History of Sioux County” by Nelson Nieuwenhuis give a great historical account of the area. The “1908 Sioux County Atlas” also has historical accounts of the various townships of Sioux County.

Catherine ‘Katie’ Schuh was born 17 Oct 1850 Sandweiler Luxembourg died 25 Mar 1918 Alton IA.She was the daughter of Michael Schuh 1830 and Anna Pechter 1830

2 . Susanna Hastert 1874-1958 She married Nicholas Ruppert 1870-1948 they had fourteen children.
3 . Anna Hastert 1876-1951 She married Adolph Bachman 1877-1993 they had three children.
4 . Magdelene Hastert 1878-1972 She married Peter Streff 1871-1933 They had four children.
5 . Peter James Hastert 1880-1970 He married Ann K. Pfeiffer 1880-1942. No children listed.
6 . Mary Caroline Hastert 1884-1972 She married Eugene John Schroeder 1878-1954 they had eight children.
7 . John Jacob Hastert 1885-1954 He married May Mary Demuth 1886-1969. They had five children
8 . Nicholas Hastert 1886-1906
9 . Ann Marie Hastert 1889-1984 She married Leo Joseph Kettler 1885-1965 They had about eleven children.
10. Henry Peter Hastert 1891 1956 He married Kathry Helne Schlesser 18931993 and one child was indicated.

OBITUARY of Nicholas Hastert

Nicholas Hastert died at his home in Alton on Thursday evening December 11th after an illness of eighteen months. Deceased was born at Meindorff Luxemburg on February 11, 1841 and was therefore 72 years old when he passed away. Deceased came to the United States in 1869. Two years later, on August 22nd, at Chicago, he was united in marriage to Miss Cathryn Schuh. This union was blessed with ten children, nine of whom survive. In the fall of 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Hastert came to Alton from David City, Nebraska, to enjoy the remaining years of their life in ease and comfort. During this short period Mr. Hastert made many friends here.
The funeral services will be held from St. Mary’s Catholic Church this Saturday morning at 9:30 A.M. and will be conducted by Very F.J. Brune. Interment will be made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Deceased is survived by the widow and the following sons and daughters: Charles of Shelby, Nebraska, Mrs. Nic Ruppert of Alton, Mrs. Adolph Backman of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Peter Streff of Alton, Peter of Los Angeles, Mrs. Eugene Schroeder of Oyens, Iowa, John of David City, Nebraska, Mrs. Leo Kettler of Lismore, Minnesota, and Henry of Alton. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother who reside in Luxemburg and one sister, Mrs. Chas. Rusdorff of Osceola, Nebraska.

Mrs. Catherine Hastert died at her home at Alton on Monday, March 25, from epilepsy, at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 8 days. Mrs. Hastert was born at Sandwatter, Luxemburg, on October 17, 1850 and came to the United States in 1869 when 19 years old. She was married to Nicholas Hastert in Chicago on August 1, 1871, coming to Alton to make her home in 1910. Her husband was a farmer, retired at the time of his death. Catherine is the daughter of Michael & Anna (Pechter) Schuh. They are the parents of Charles Edward, Susan, Anna, Magdalene, Peter James, Mary Caroline, John Jacob, Nicholas, Ann Marie & Henry Peter.
Funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Church at Alton March 27. The following relatives from away being present to pay their last respects to the honored relative: Charles E. Hastert, Shelby, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. John Hastert, Mrs. Mary Hilger, David City, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Ruppert, Currie, Minnesota; Leo Kettler, Chanafer, Minnesota.
The services were conducted by Very Reverend F.J. Brune. Interment took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Deceased was preceded in death by her partner to the Great Beyond in 1912. The following children mourn their loss: Charles E. Hastert, Shelby, Nebraska; Mrs. Susie Ruppert, Alton; Mrs. Lena Streff, Alton and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Anna Bachman, Los Angeles; Peter and John Hastert, David City, Nebraska; Mrs. Mary Schroeder, Oyens.
The bereaved ones have the sympathy of their many friends in this community.
