Doherty, John Sr. (1851-1924) & second wife Catherine McMullen Family

This story was taken from pages 67-70 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was summarized for ease of the family generational flow and it was thus transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added into the narrative by Wilma J. Vande Berg.

JOHN DOHERTY, SR. was born in 1851 and had one daughter, Mayme Walpole and a son by his first marriage. (*His first marriage was to Ellen O’Conner 1858- died 9 April 1883, she was the daughter of Dennie O’Conner 1817-1897 and Bridget 1840-1913, added research by Wilma J. Vande Berg)

Following the death of his wife, he married Catherine McMullen 24 Jan 1884 Clinton, IA , who was born in 19 Feb 1854 Ontario , New York. John died in 1924 and Catherine in 1922. They were the parents of John, Jr., Edward, Michael, William, Thomas and Irene.

MARY “MAMIE” DOHERTY (child of first marriage) was born 27 February 1878/79 at Maquoketa, IA and died May 1951 . She married John Walpole and they had four children, Ellen, Florence, Horace and Loretta. In the 1880 census Mary was age 2 so her birth date could have been 1878 as Frank was a baby of 8 mo. in June of 1880.

FRANCIS ‘FRANK ‘ DOHERTY born about Oct of 1879 Jasper County Iowa. He lived in the Rock Valley area. 1895 census has Francis V. Doherty age 15 born Jackson Co. UA lived in Rock, Sioux IA . In a legal notice, May 22, 1952, he was an absentee in his own estate matters, as of Aug 13, 1953 the estate was closed, believe that his date and place of death was a mystery.) He was known to be a sheep rancher dealer and was known to leave unannounced for several years. He is not listed as a survivor in his brothers and sisters obits. Submitter scoured the census records from 1900 on with no success. Frank is believed not to have had a family.

JOHN JR. (Jack) DOHERTY (first son of John Doherty, Sr.) was born at Maquoketa, Iowa. Jack and Nellie Martens were married in Columbus, South Dakota in 1911. They farmed north of Rock Valley and later retired in Rock Valley where they resided until their deaths. Jack passed away in 1970 and Nell in 1943. They are both buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery. They had one daughter (see Wayne Scott).

EDWARD DOHERTY (second son of John Doherty, Sr.) was born in Burlington, Iowa on May 10, 1885. Anna Weisensee was born at Ida Grove, Iowa on January 29, 1884. Edward and Anna were married on February 22, 1913 at Alvord. They farmed three miles north and one-half east of Rock Valley. Ed was killed in an automobile accident on the north edge of Rock Valley on January 29, 1937. Anna passed away in Ft. Scott, Kansas on October 12, 1970; both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery. They were the parents of two sons, Bernard (11 children) and Frank (4 children).

JOSEPHINE ‘Josie’ DOHETY born 14 Feb 1891 Sioux County IA to John Doherty and K. Mc Mullen. Montana marriage record has Josephine C. Doherty 63, from Butte MT, born Sioux County IA single dau of John Doherty and Catherine Mc Millen, married Herman C. Miller 71 age, married 23 Aug 1954 at Silver Bow MT . She died about July 1964 Rock Valley IA.

MICHAEL DOHERTY (third son of John Doherty, Sr.) was born Dec 3, 1892 and was married to Mary R. Allen in Alvord, Iowa in 1917. They farmed near Rock Valley until moving to a farm near Inwood in 1939, where they lived until their deaths, Mike in Feb 1965 at Inwood IA and Mary in 1971. Both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Larchwood, Iowa. They were the parents of eight children, Kathleen (3 children), Donald (7 children), Rosalyn (7 children), Gerald (4 children), Monica (3 children), Robert (13 children), Mary Ann (2 children) and John Michael (deceased).

THOMAS G. DOHERTY born 1895 Rock Valley IA. born Nov 17, 1894. See his obit on the GSCGS web site born 1894 died 1933). He married Etta Fangmann of Dubuque. Don’t believe they had children. Survivors didn’t not include borhter Frank Doherty

WILLIAM DANIEL DOHERTY born Nov. 29, 1896 Rock Valley IA and died May 13, 1948 at Compton CA. He married Mary Linan,who died 1942. He had four children Maureen Den Hartog, Kenneth Doherty, Florence and William Jr.

IRENE DOHERTY (daughter of John Doherty, Sr.) was born on her parent’s farm north of Rock Valley. She attended parochial school at St. Mary’s Academy. She left for Chicago, Illinois in the early 1920’s. she married Lester Ryon and lived in Smithville, Missouri and later in Kansas City where she still resides. They had three children, Hugh, James and Charlene.

RESEARCH NOTES :
1880 census of Perry, Jackson, IA lists John Doherty age 30 born abt 1850 New York, his wife was Ella Doherty 22, born abt 1858 Iowa , they had a daughter Mary 2 abt 1878, and Frank 8 months abt 1879.

OBITUARY OF JOHN DOHERTY, SR.
From the Rock Valley Bee, January 18, 1924:
DEATH OF JOHN DOHERTY
John Doherty, whose death was briefly mentioned in last week's Bee, passed away at his home in Rock Valley, last week Wednesday afternoon [January 9], after a lingering illness with palsy. Mr. Doherty was a man who was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a kind husband and father, an obliging neighbor and a loyal citizen. He was of a kind and generous disposition and a friend of all who knew him.
Mr. Doherty was born in Hanover, N.J., April 15, 1851, and had attained the age of seventy-two years, eight months and twenty-four days. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to Dubuque, Iowa. A few years later they moved to Jackson County, Iowa, where Mr. Doherty grew to manhood. Thirty-six years ago, Mr. Doherty moved to Rock Valley vicinity and settled on a farm northeast of town, where he lived until about six years ago when he moved with his family to Rock Valley where he resided until death claimed him.
Mr. Doherty was united in marriage to Miss Ellen O'Connor Jan. 29, 1877. Three children were born to them. Five years later his wife died. On June 27, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Kate Mullen[i.e., McMullen]. To this union eight children were born. His second wife preceded him in death July 10, 1922.
He leaves to mourn, eight children, Mrs. Mary Walpole, Josie, Irene, Ed., Jack, Mike, Tom, and Will, all of Rock Valley and vicinity; and two brothers, James of Enterprise, Oregon, and William, of Rock Valley, and one sister, Mrs. Thos. O'Mara, of Rock Valley.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church in Rock Valley Friday morning, Jan. 11. Among those from a distance who were at the funeral were, Dan McMullen, Breckenridge, Minn.; Ed McMullen, Kennebec, S.D.; Mrs. Rose O'Connor and son, Kennebec, S.D.; Phil Smith, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Tom Fitzpatrick, Maurice, Iowa.

John Doherty a respected pioneer citizen, died at his home in Rock Valley Jan. 9th. For several years he had been in delicate health and his death was due to phypostatle pneumonia. Mr. Doherty was born in Havana, New York April 15, 1851 and at the demise was 72 years, 8 months and 24 days old. When a child his parents came west and located at Dubuque where they resided for several years. Later they moved to Bellevue, Jackson county, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Ellen O'Conner Jan. 29, 1877. This union was blessed with three children. After five years of pleasant marital relations, death severed the golden cord that bound them together. June 27, 1885 he was married to Miss Kate McMullen. As a result of this union eight children were born, seven of which survive him. He came to Sioux County in the spring of 1888 and located on a farm four miles north of Rock Valley and became one of the substantial and progressive farmers of this community and by frugality and industry he acquired a competency. Six years ago he retired from farm life and moved to town. He was bereft of his companion July 10, 1922 and since that time, he has continued the home through the aid of his daughters who tenderly ministered to his wants. He was a man of exemplary habits and was respected for his uprightness of character. He leaves nine children, two brothers, James of Enterprise, Ore. and William and one sister, Mrs. Thomas O'Menra of Rock Valley.
Funeral services were held Friday morning Jan. 11 at St. Mary's church conducted by Pastor Rev. John A. O'Rielly in the presence of many neighbors and friends. Interment occurred in the Catholic Cemetery south of town. Those in attendance from abroad were, Dan McMullen, Breckinridge, Minn.; Ed McMullen, Kenebec, S.D.; Mrs. Rose Connenn and son, Kenebec, S.D.; Phil Smith Sioux Falls; Tom Linnan and Mr. Fitzpatrick, Maurice. A wide circle of friends of the family extend condolence in their hour of sorrow.

OBITUARY OF CATHERINE DOHERTY
From the Rock Valley Bee, July 14, 1922:
MRS. JOHN DOHERTY DIED MONDAY, JULY 10, 1922
Mrs. John Doherty, for many years a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity, died at the Hull hospital at Hull, Monday afternoon, July 10, following an illness of a few weeks. She was taken to the hospital at Hull about two weeks ago where an operation was performed last week, Wednesday. She seemed to improve for a while after the operation but a change for the worse took place and her children were notified and called to her bedside Sunday and on the following day she passed away, in spite of all that medical skill and loving hands could do for her.
Mrs. Doherty was a good kind-hearted woman, and a faithful wife and mother, and she was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her, as the large attendance at the funeral and the beautiful floral tributes amply testified.
The subject of this sketch was born in the state of New York, Feb. 19, 1856, ad had attained the age of sixty-five years, 7 months, and nine days. Her early life was spent in the community where she was born and there she received her education and grew to womanhood.
Thirty five years ago she was united in marriage to John Doherty, and since that time she has been a resident of this vicinity living on a farm northeast of Rock Valley, for several years, and later the family moved into town, where she resided at the time of her death.
Mrs. Doherty is survived by her husband, five sons and two daughters, Ed, John, Mike, Tom and Will, and Josephine and Irene; one step-daughter, Mrs. Mame Walpole, all of Rock Valley and vicinity, and one step son, Frank Doherty. She also leaves four sisters and thee brothers.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church in Rock Valley Wednesday forenoon. The services were largely attended by sympathizing relatives and friends.
Among the relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Kaneen, a sister of the deceased, of Kenebeck, S.D., Ed McMullen, a brother, also of Kennebeck; Mr. and Mrs. Dan McMullen, a brother, of Breckenridge, S.D.; Miss Smith and John Smith, cousins of Sioux Falls; Mrs. P. J. Ryan and daughters, of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Tom Gibbs of Bellview, Ia.; Mrs. Colso and Miss Lanagan, Challotte, Iowa and Mrs. Nell Doherty of Marcus, Iowa.

OBITUARY OF JAMES DORHERTY 1824-1901 Father of John Doherty Sr. 1854 – 1824
Sioux County Herald of March 27, 1901 p.1 Rock Valley news
James Doherty died at the residence of his son-in-law, James O'Mara, six miles north of Rock Valley, Wednesday evening, of pneumonia; he had been a resident of Rock Valley and vicinity for several years and was a veteran of the civil war. The funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic church Saturday morning. Jerry Rusk post G. A. R. acting as pallbearers and escort.

James Doherty, a pioneer of Sioux County passed to his eternal home Wednesday March 20, 1901, at the age of 77 years.. Mr. Doherty’s death was caused by pneumonia after an illness of about a week. Many of his friends were not aware of his illness until they heard the sad news of his death. Mr. Jas. Doherty was born in County Clare, Ireland, in 1824 and came to this country in 1849, residing for seven years in New York. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Daly and in 1866 moved to Dubuque where they made their home until 1889 when they came to Sioux County to live.
In August, 1862, Mr. Doherty enlisted in Co. E. 91st Iowa Volunteer Infantry and participated in several of the famous battles of the war. Owing to disabilities he was mustered out after one year’s service.
In 1891 his companion and helpmate of many years died, since which time he has resided with his daughter Mrs. Thomas O’Meara. Three sons and one daughter survive him John, James, William and Mrs. Thomas O’Meara.
The funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church Saturday morning at 10:00, Father Phelan performing the last sad rites. Jerry Rusk Post GAR, of which the deceased was a prominent member, attended in a body and assisted in the burial ceremony at the grave.
The family have the sincere sympathy of all in the hour of their sorrow.
(In 1880 he was living in Bloomfield Clinton IA, in 1895 he was living in Doon IA. Children John 1849-1924, Mary 1856, Mary 1859, William 1861-1928 and Patrick 1863-1894. According to the obit above several more sons.) (No obituary of Mary Daly/Daley 1821 Ireland died Jan 22, 1891 Rock Valley was found)
