Cullinan Brothers- John 1859 and Thomas 1862 and Wife
This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.
Thomas and John Cullinan, brothers, were born in County Clare, Ireland. Both came to America and bought farms in Sioux Township.
JOHN CULLINAN – came to the United States in 1882 and settled at Maurice, Iowa. Here he did day labor until he left for the Klondike gold rush. He and his friend, Michael McNamara, went together. He made enough from mining to purchase a farm in Sioux Township Northeast ¼ of Section 19, seven miles west and one mile north of Rock Valley.
John did not marry, but his land stayed in the Cullinan family as his nephew, John, a son of Thomas, acquired it. John married Loretta Flanagan, and they lived on the farm until 1975, when they moved to Rock Valley. They had three daughters, Cleon, Mary Ann, and Barbara, who have all moved to other locations. Recently an acreage with the buildings on it was sold to Herman Zomer, but the land still belongs to the Cullinans.
THOMAS CULLINAN – was born in April of 1862 and came to the United States with his parents, his two brothers, Pat and Martin, and his sister Mary, in 1883. They first came to eastern Iowa and in 1885 they came to Sioux County and settled near Maurice, Iowa, where Thomas worked on the Great Northern Railroad.
Thomas married Elizabeth Linnan, who was born in Little Port, Iowa in 1860. At twelve years of age, Elizabeth became the family homemaker due to the death of her mother, who was the victim of a farm accident. Elizabeth moved with her father and six siblings to Maurice, Iowa, in 1873. They journeyed by a covered wagon and drove a head of thirty cattle with them. The trip took three months. They were quarantined at Emmetsburg for some time with smallpox.
Thomas and Elizabeth were married at Hawarden and came to Sioux Township in 1890 and bought two pieces of land in 1893, 80 acres in Section 2 and 240 acres in the northern half of Section 1, two miles west, four miles north, and one-half mile west of Rock Valley.
Thomas and Elizabeth had a family of six children: Josephine (Josie), Thomas (deceased), John, Michael (deceased), Martin (Marty) and Francis. The four living children all reside in Rock Valley.
The farm contains virgin prairie soil. When Thomas arrived on the farm, there were many mounds believed to be Indian burial mounds. Deep ruts, from wagon trains crossing this area, could be seen until recently.
In 1975 the acreage with the farm buildings on it was sold to Gerald Van Beek, but the farm land still belongs to the Cullinans.
