Bauder, Gottlieb 1841-1920 & Salome (Sally) Jacobs Family
This story was taken from the ‘Rock Valley Records & Recollections’ book written about 1976 page 38, in honor of the two hundredth birthday of our nation. It was a revision of the history written by Lottie Thomas in 1955. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society and some research notes were added.
In the year 1890 Gottlieb Bauder and his wife Salome (both of Swiss descent) and their family moved from Elgin, Iowa to a 160 acre farm southwest of Rock Valley in Garfield Township Northeast ¼ Section 26, which they purchased from John Walpole for $4,000. According to the farm deed it was first purchased by Nathaniel West in 1857 for $1600 from the United States government. The next year it was sold to Ira Thayer; then two other Thayers, Philinda (his wife) and Francis (possibly a son) had possession of the land, after which others owned the farm until it became Bauder property.
Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Bauder had seven children. Five of them, Emma, Ida, John, Louisa, and Fred, continued to live in this community. The farm house (remodeled) and barn which were on the farm when Gottlieb bought it are still in use. The Bauders lived on the farm until 1919 when they retired and moved to Rock Valley.
FRED BAUDER—Fred moved to Rock Valley with his parents.
LOUISA BAUDER—Louisa married John Miller. (See Miller history)
IDA BAUDER—Ida married Fred Miller. (See Miller history)
EMMA BAUDER—Emma, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Bauder, married Fred A. Miller, son of Alex Miller (one of the original Miller brothers). With their family, Emma and Fred moved to the farm upon the retirement of her parents and lived there until they retired to Rock Valley in 1947. Their children are Alvin, Florence, and Esther (Mrs. Pete Van Driel) of Rock Valley, and Lawrence of El Paso, Texas.
Upon their retirement, their daughter, Esther and husband, Pete Van Driel, and their sons moved to the Bauder farm, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Driel are still living there, which makes eighty-six years of Bauder family members living on and possessing the land. Their sons are Eugene, an attorney at Davenport, Iowa; Jim of Bloomington, Minn., who is with the National Bank and Book Co.; and Dave, who is a district representative for Fiat-Allis Road Construction.
JOHN BAUDER—John Bauder, son of Gottlieb and Salome, was born in a stone house near Elgin, Iowa, May 12, 1869. He came to Garfield township with his parents in 1890. In 1900 he and his brother-in-law, Fred Miller, purchased the farm directly south of his parents’ farm. Later, John bought Miller’s share of the farm. This was John’s home until his death in 1950.
John married Amelia Pfarrer in 1901; she, too, was of Swiss descent. (Her grandmother was a “Gold Star Mother” – Rock Valley’s Legion is named in honor of Pfarrer). Amelia’s parents came to America by sailboat. They were shipwrecked enroute and were picked up by a freighter. The trip took forty days. They lost all their possessions at sea, except for the clothes they were wearing. Later, one of the trunks did wash ashore. Mrs. Bauder now lives at Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden, Iowa, age ninety-six.
Mr. and Mrs. John Bauder had seven children, but only two, Walter and Art, lived in the community. Art and his wife, the former Esther Gayer, have been living on the John Bauder family farm since 1952, which makes seventy-six years of Bauder family members owning and living on this farm. They have six children: Dwayne, David, John, Mary, Susan, and Julie.
The area in Garfield Township where the Miller brothers, Alex Yunker, the Bauders, and others, all of Swiss descent, settled what was called “Little Switzerland.”
The following comment is taken from the Sioux County History book: “The first few years these Swiss people farmed they stacked the grain, then they plowed until the ground froze. Then they threshed the stacked grain, and afterwards picked the corn with snow on the ground. Through energy, foresight, and hard work, this colony became one of the most prosperous communities in Sioux County, and its people were outstanding in the raising of high grade cattle and hogs, and were highly respected by all those who knew them.”

The subject of this sketch was born in Bern, Switzerland, Dec. 7, 1841, where he received his early training and grew to manhood. He came to this country in May 1865, and lived in Fayette County near Elgin, Iowa, until 1890 when he moved with his family to Sioux County and lived on a farm in Garfield township until the spring of 1919 when he moved to Rock Valley where he resided until the time of his death.
He was united in marriage July 6, 1868, to Selma Jacob. To this union seven children were born, three girls and four boys, Mrs. John Miller, Mrs. Fred Miller, and Mrs. Fred A. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his wife, two brothers and three sisters, twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Short funeral services were held at the late home of the deceased and at the German Lutheran Church south of Rock Valley Saturday afternoon, the services being in charge of Rev. Gillmann, and the remains were taken to the German Lutheran Cemetery for burial. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Ben Schori of Elgin, Iowa, a sister of the deceased, and Will Weihe of Postville, Iowa, a nephew. Six grandchildren of the deceased acted as pall bearers.
Mr. Bauder was a man who was highly thought of by all who knew him. He was a kind husband and father and an obliging neighbor and was always a useful man in the community where he lived. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their great sorrow.

A similar obituary was published in the Alton Democrat, August 7, 1920: Rock Valley news, with some variant data. It spells his forename Gottlieb. It says that he located at Elgin, Iowa, July 6, 1866 (having come to America in 1865). It gives his wife's name as Miss Salma Jacobs.
The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Goettlieb Bauder, buried in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sioux Center, IA. His wife's name is given in the index as Salone Bauder; her obituary (posted separately) gives her name as Sally (Jacob).OBITUARY OF SALONE (SALLY) BAUDER

RESEARCH NOTES
Both the Sioux County Cemetery Index and FindaGrave.com give her forename as Salone; one suspects that this is an error. FindaGrave has a photo of her headstone, but it merely says “Mother” with her birth and death dates. Buried in Peace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sioux Center.
The Sioux County Cemetery Index spells her husband’s name “Goettlieb.”
Her death certificate has Salma Bauder, widow, husband’s name not given; born Sept. 8, 1846 in Illinois; father Michael Jacob, born in Germany, mother’s name not known; informant Fred Bauder; died in Rock Valley, June 4, 1925 at 5:45 a.m., of “senility”; buried in E. V. German Lutheran Cemetery.
