This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial Book of 1991 page 293 and submitted to the book by Wilma J. Vande Berg. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Gertrude Vande Berg was born near Sioux Center on December 7, 1887 to John Vande Berg and Wilhelmina Kastein. (See the story on her parents). She grew up on the family farm near Sioux Center.

On March 25, 1909 Gertrude married John De Roos of Hull and they lived in Hull for several years where John was employed with his brother in the De Roos Creamery. John’s brother, Andrew De Roos, married Gertrude’s sister Mina Vande Berg. John and Gertrude later made their home in Rock Rapids, Iowa. John and Andrew De Roos were sons of Oepke De Roos and Tryntje Vander Stoep.

John and Gertrude De Roos were the parents of four children.

Kathryn “Carol” De Roos born December 25, 1909 married Richard Louis Benesh. They live in Rock Rapids, Iowa and have two children, Dr. Richard Benesh Jr. of Brodhead, Wisconsin and Carol (Mrs. Lars Olaf Nordberg) of Divonne, France.

Joan Wilhelmina De Roos born May 20, 1912 married Horace Richard Cummings. They live in Littleton, Colorado, and have two children, Kay (Mrs. Glenn Sayers) and Richard Cummings.

Orwin Oepke De Roos born Oct. 20, 1915, married and had one daughter, Betty Jean De Roos.

John Jr. De Roos born May 27, 1920 married Carol Jane Hansen. They live in Bellingham, Washington and have two children, Mark De Roos of Cranbrook B.C. Canada and Jan Carrie De Roos of Seattle, Washington.
