Borgman, Jacob Sr. 1854-1937 and Aaltje ‘Effie’ Vander Aarde family

This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial Book of 1991 page 254 and was submitted to the book by Mrs. Elaine Feldhacker. It was transcribed by Beth De Leeuw for this BIOS and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg, both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

The Borgman family may have been Sioux County’s earliest settlers in the Sioux Center area. After their marriage in 1882 they lived on a farm in West Branch Township #26, south of Sioux Center, Iowa.

Jacob Borgman Sr., was born on December 17, 1854 to Ida Simons de Wit and Jakob Popkes Borgman at Eenrum, Groningen, Netherlands. In 1872 when he was 17 years old he immigrated to the United States, but he did not come over together with his family. Immigrating together were his father Jakob Popkes, his mother, Ida and his brothers, Johannes, and Willem Borgman, and his only sister Maria (Mary).

While immigrating a tragic accident happened at Liverpool, England where the ship had made a stop. His father, Jakob Popkes Borgman was killed at the age of 48 years. There were three versions of his death: (1) The father Jakob, had gone back into the village to pick up some oranges and other things, and upon coming back up the boat ramp, he fell in and was crushed between the ship and the ramp, or loading dock. (2) While leaving the ship in Liverpool to buy some oranges for his family, he fell off the gang plank and was drowned. (3) Jakob dropped about 60 feet into the dry dock and was killed. After the accident, the body was placed in a bag and he was buried in the Irish Sea. His mother Ida took her children and traveled on to Michigan. She settled east of Holland, Michigan and she was married to a man by the name of Bernardus Volmari. She died on September 10, 1912 at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 6 days at Hamilton, Michigan and is buried in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery near Holland, Michigan.

On March 2, 1882, Jacob Borgman Sr. was united in marriage to Aafje (Effie) J. Vander Aarde, by A. Buursma, Minister of the Gospel at Orange City, Iowa. Jacob was 27 years old and Effie was 20 years old at the time of their marriage. After his first wife Effie’s death in 1931, Jacob was married to Geppy Kuiken Raak. Jacob died on September 19, 1937 at the age of 82 years, 9 months, and 2 days of a heart attack. He is buried next to his first wife Effie at West Lawn Cemetery at Orange City, Iowa.

Aafje (Effie) J. Vander Aarde was born on March 28 to Dirkje Burger and Bastiaan Vander Aarde at Kolhorn, a municipality of Barsingerhorn, North Holland, Netherlands. Aafje was 12 years old when she immigrated with her father, step-mother, brothers, and sisters on September 9, 1874 from Rotterdam, South Holland, on the ship “W.A. Scholton” (Netherlands-American Steam Navigation Co.) Her father Bastiaan was a baker by occupation and was 44 years old at the time. Her mother died on December 7, 1870 at Kolhorn. Bastiaan then married her housekeeper, Aagtje (Agatha) Ericks on October 8, 1871. When they immigrated, she had brothers, Klaas 18, Pieter 14, and Bastiaan 4 years and her sisters were Anne 10, Trijtnje 8, and Betje was only a few months old. Their voyage on ship took six weeks and during this time Bastiaan and Agatha lost their first child Dirk, when he became ill, and was 3 years old when he died and was buried on the way. The family came to Orange City, Iowa, and it was a strange land and difficult with a large family. First they rented a small house, and it was not very long until Bastiaan bought 80 acres just southeast of Orange City for $26.00 an acre! This was known for years as the Vander Aarde addition. Bastiaan was mostly in the farming and dairy business, they milked cows and delivered milk. On December 2, 1880, Bastiaan became a naturalized citizen of the United States after 5 years of being residents of Orange City. In 1988 he started a brick factory on his property and supplied brick for a number of homes, including the family home on this property. This factory was located just north of the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks. The only remaining house of these bricks is owned by Northwestern College today. In 1896 it was forced out of business because of the depression. They had two more children born in Orange City, Elizabeth (Mrs. Herman Te Paske) and Gerrit. Effie Borgman died on June 25, 1931 at the age of 69 years, 2 months, and 28 days, and is buried next to her husband at West Lawn Cemetery at Orange City, Iowa.

The Borgman’s were the parents of eight children: Jacob Jr., Dora (Mrs. Henry Ver Steeg), Ida (Mrs. Edward Mulder), Agnes (Mrs. George J. Vande Brake), Mary (Mrs. Lane Vande Brake), Benjamin, Kathryn (Mrs. Lester Muilenburg) and Edward Borgman.
