Jongewaard, Albert Cornelius M. D. 1879 and Johanna Christina Vander Meer Family

This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial Book of 1991 page 385 and 386. It was submitted to the book by Judith M. Layne. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw and notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg, both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

This is the family story of Albert C. Jongewaard, M.D., who were early residents of Sioux Center, Iowa. Albert Cornelius Jongewaard born December 11, 1879 in Orange City, Iowa and Johanna Christina Vander Meer born March 2, 1885 in Orange City, Iowa were married January 1, 1904. Albert’s parents were Cornelius Jongewaard and Helena Stoutenburg. Johanna’s parents were Dirk Vander Meer and Jannetje Ver Steeg Synhorst.

Johanna “Anne” C, Vander Meer taught school before her marriage to Albert C. Jongewaard. Albert C. also taught school before he enrolled in medical school. He attended Rush Medical in Chicago, Illinois and graduated in 1904. He began his medical practice in Sioux Center in 1904 after his graduation.

Five children were born in Sioux Center: Helen Genevieve in 1904; Richard Cornelius in 1905, died at age 9 months; Richard Cornelius in 1908; Melba Marian in 1910; and Albert John in 1914.

In 1917 Dr. Jongewaard moved his family to Montana. They lived on a large ranch near Forest Grove and not far from Lewistown, Montana for almost seven years. Two daughters were born in Montana; Judith Mae in 1918 and June Elizabeth in 1922.

The family moved back to Sioux Center in 1924. Dr. Jongewaard again practiced medicine in Sioux Center. He was Sioux County Coroner for several years and also County and City Health Officer. Dr. Jongewaard was a member of the hospital staff of the Sacred Heart Hospital in LeMars, Iowa. The family were members of Central Reformed Church, and Mrs. Jongewaard gave much of her time to the church. A daughter, Beverly Anne, was born in Sioux Center in 1926.

Helen “Helengene” graduated from Fergus County High School in Lewistown, Montana in 1922. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa and later graduated from Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. She taught high school Home Economics. In 1934 Helengene married George W. Baldwin. They lived on a farm near Hawarden, Iowa and 11 miles west of Sioux Center. Later they had a farm near Waterville, Minnesota. After George Baldwin died, Helengene moved to Santa Ana, California.

Richard “Tiny” played basketball for Sioux Center High School and graduated in 1928. He continued his education at the University of Iowa at Iowa City and played on the college football team. In 1934 Richard married Helen Marie Moi in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Hudson, South Dakota and in 1938 moved to Montana. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II. He divorced Helen and later married Goldie Henderson in California in 1942.

Melba also graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1928 and attended Western Union College (now Westmar College) in LeMars, Iowa. She was secretary to Superintendent Sandvan at the Sioux Center High School and later worked in the local post office. Melba married James Tindall Robertson from LeMars in 1934. They lived in Santa Monica, California and later in Birmingham, Michigan.

Albert “Ab” after graduation from Sioux Center High School in 1932 went to Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, Iowa. In 1934 he enlisted in the United States Navy for four years. Ab also played basketball in high school and at Northwestern, and continued playing while in the Navy. In 1941 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and graduated from the United States Naval Air Training Station in Corpus Christi, Texas as a commissioned officer. He served as a Navy pilot in the Pacific during World War II. Albert married Mae Jenkins in California in 1941.

Judith started first grade in a two-room white school house behind the larger brick school building. She attended all twelve grades in Sioux Center graduating from high school in 1936. After graduation she taught in a one-room country school ten miles west of Sioux Center at Lebanon.

June Elizabeth “Betty June” and Beverly Anne attended school in Sioux Center until Dr. Jongewaard’s death in 1938. Mrs. Anne Jongewaard and the three younger daughters moved to Santa Monica, California during the summer of 1938.

Judith attended Santa Monica Junior College. She married Bruce Lee Layne from Louisville, Kentucky in 1939.

June graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1939 and went on to Santa Monica Junior College. During World War II, she worked at Northrop Aviation in Inglewood, California. June married Robert V. Guthrie in 1943. They lived in the Los Angeles area after their marriage. Later June moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Beverly attended school in Santa Monica, California, but later returned to Iowa and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1944. She continued her education in California and graduated from Los Angeles City College. Beverly was a secretary at General Motors Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. In 1956 Beverly married Henry George Hayes, Jr. in Birmingham, Michigan.

After leaving Sioux Center, Iowa in 1938, Mrs. Anne (Johanna) Jongewaard lived in California most of the time until her death in December, 1953 in Downey, California.

Albert C. (1879-1938) and Johanna C. (1885-1953) Jongewaard are buried in the Sioux Center Cemetery along with their infant son.

Three daughters are no longer living. Helengene Jongewaard Baldwin died in Kansas City, Missouri in November, 1985. Melba Jongewaard Robertson died in Deerfield Beach, Florida in May 1983. June Jongewaard Guthrie died in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in April, 1989.

Two sons and two daughters are living. Richard C. Jongewaard lives in Hayward, California. Albert J. Jongewaard lives in Blue Springs, Missouri. Judith Jongewaard Layne lives in Seattle, Washington. Beverly Jongewaard Hayes lives in Spokane, Washington.

Dr. Albert C Jongewaard ,59 Sioux Center died Sunday at 9.30 a.m. at his home after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday in the home at one o’clock and in the Central Reformed church at 2 o’claock with the Rev. Mr R. Meengs officiating.
Dr. Jongewaard was born at Orange City on a farm. He is survived by his widow, two sons Richard and Albert and five daughters, Mrs. G.W. Baldwin of Hawarden, Mrs. James Robertson of California, Judith Mae, Betty June and Beverly Anne. Also one brother John of Hurley, SD., three sisters Mrs. H.B. Bogaard of Orange City, Mrs. C.A. Walhof of Rock Valley, Mrs. J.H Muilenburg of Manchester, SD

A.C. Jongewaard was born near Orange City Dec 11, 1878 and so was just past 59 years of age. He was a graduate of Rush Medical College in Chicago. In 1904 he located at Sioux Center and since that time practiced medicine there. Dr. Jongewaard was twice elected coroner of Sioux county and for some years was health officer in Sioux Center. Dr. Jongewaard has been married 34 years the day preceded his death. He is survived by his wife, two sons and five daughters, one daughter being Geo. W Baldwin of Hawarden
Obituary for Dr. A. C. Jongewaard reads: Dr. A. C. Jongewaard passed away at his home here Sunday morning, January 2, 1938 at 9:30 A.M. He was 59 years old. His death came as a result of pernicious anemia and complications. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Central Reformed Church, Rev. Meengs officiating.
He was born December 11, 1878 near Orange City where he grew to manhood, graduating from Northwestern Academy and teaching school in the county four years. He then took a medical course at Chicago, a six year course which he completed in four years by attending night school at the University an taking his medical training at Rush Medical where he received his degree. He was a student instructor in pathology while attending the medical college from which he graduated in 1904. That year he took his bride Johanna Christtina Vander Meer to Sioux Center where he set up a practice in which he has continued for thirty-four years. All of these with the exception of seven years were spent in Sioux Center. He moved his family to Montana for seven years for a change of climate and at the end of that time he returned to Sioux Center where he continued to practice medicine until two years ago when his health began to fail.
About a year ago he started having blood transfusions at intervals, until a few weeks previous to his death.
During his residence here Dr. Jongewaard was twice elected County Coroner and has been heath officer for the town for some years.
Dr. & Mrs. Jongewaard remembered their thirty-fourth wedding anniversary on New Year’s Day, just one day before the doctor passed away. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, two sons, Richard Cornelius of Hudson, SD and Albert John of San Diego, CA, and five daughters; Mrs. G. W. Baldwin of Hawarden, Mrs. James T. Robertson of Santa Monica, CA, Judith Mae, who teaches rural school, Betty June and Beverly Ann who are in school here. One son, Richard C., died in infancy; one brother J. C. Jongewaard of Hurley, SD; three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Muilenburg of Manchester, SD; Mrs. H. B. Bogaard of Orange City, and Mrs. C. A. Walhoff of Rock Valley all of whom came to attend the last rites

Obituary for Johanna Jongewaard reads:
Funeral services for Mrs. Johanna Jongewaard, who died on December 22, at her home in California, were held at the Central Reformed church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Klaaren officiating. Burial was in the cemetery here.
Johanna Christina Jongewaard was born March 2, 1885, to Dirk and Jannetje Vander Meer at Orange City. She was graduated from the Orange City high school in 1902 and taught rural schools in the county until her marriage to Albert C. Jongewaard in 1904. Following his graduation from Rush Medical college in Chicago in 1904, the couple moved to Sioux Center where Dr. Jongewaard established his practice. They spent from 1914 to 1923 in Montana and then returned to Sioux Center where they resided until Dr. Jongewaard's death in 1938. Mrs. Jongewaard moved to California that year and had made her home there since.
She was a charter member of the W.C.T.U. here and was active in the Woman's Club and the Central church ladies aid.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Helengene Baldwin, Tower MN; Mrs. Melba Robertson, San Pedros, Brazil; Mrs. Judith Layne, Seattle, WA; Mrs. June Guthrie, Hopkins, MN and Miss Beverly Jongewaard, Detroit, MI; and two sons, Richard of Oakland, CA and Albert of Downey, CA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Sara Van Steenbergen of Mitchell, SD, and two brothers, Neal Vander Meer of Alton and Jacob Vander Meer of El Paso, TX.
