Jansen, Teunis 1892 and Dena Zeutenhorst Family

This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book of 1991 pages 382 and 383. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw and some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg, both of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society.

Teunis Jansen, son of Evert and Anna Jansen was born September 19, 1892, in Ede, The Netherlands. He lived his youth and attended school in the Netherlands, coming to the United States as a young man. He found work near Sioux Center, working for Herman and Jacoba Zeutenhorst. They lived one mile south and 1½ mile west of Sioux Center. While working there, he started courting one of the Zeutenhorst daughters named Dena. They were married and Herman and Jacoba moved to Sioux Center and Teunis and Dena took over the farming operation. They farmed many years and most of the eleven children were born on this place.

Children - Cora (Mrs. Arend Broek) lives in Sioux Center and has five daughters, Delores, Joan, Arlene, Linda, Mary Ann. Edward married Gertrude Vande Berg and has three children, Mary Lou, Dennis and Glen. They live in Sioux Center. Anna (Mrs. Art Kammerman) lives in Sioux Center and has five children, Harlan, Donna, David, Ruth and Robert. Hermina (Mrs. Willis Uiteenbogaard) has four children, Leon, Les, Marlin, Rhonda. They live in Boyden. Cornie married Anna Koel and have five children, Carol, Twila, Larry, Sharon, Sandy. They live in Sioux Center. Bernice (Mrs. Irv De Vos) has three children, Kay, Kent and Terese. They live in Sioux Center. Muriel (Mrs. Stan Van Otterloo) lives in Orange City and has four children, Micheal, Kevin, Keva and Steve. Harriet (Mrs. Eldon Tesch) has two children, Bradley and Brenda. They live in Hull. Gerdena (Mrs. John Miltenberger) lives in Sioux City. Thelma (Mrs. Ron Van Zee) lives in Sioux Center and has three children, Gayle, Kim and Greg. One daughter passed away at the age of nine years.

Anna remembers well growing up on the farm without many of the luxuries. They milked cows by hand. They had no electricity and always had to take a kerosene lantern along for light. They carried all the water in the house which was used for washing, cooking and drinking. Doing the laundry on the cold back porch, heating all the water in a large wash boiler on the cook stove, and trying to get the washing machine started by putting heat underneath are also well remembered. They carried all fuel cobs and wood which was used for cooking and heating the house. Our bedrooms upstairs were not heated so we would have so many blankets on the bed you could hardly turn over. Snow on the floor when we had a bad storm was also common.

After the depression years of the thirties, the farm economy improved and Teunis bought a new F20 Farmall tractor. In 1938 Teunis bought a new Plymouth car from Achterhof and Van Kley. Shortly before World War 2, he bought eighty acres of land four miles east of Sioux Center. He paid $9000 for it and sold later for $24,000. Teunis and Dena then moved to an acreage which is now the children’s park. Later they moved into town and Teunis was janitor of the First Reformed Church for a number of years. Due to ill health Dena spent her last years in the Sioux Center nursing wing. Dena passed away in 1970 at the age of 69. Teunis then moved into the New Homestead and lived there a number of years. Teunis passed away in 1975 at the age of 93.
