OBITUARY of Hulstein, Cornelius 1830-1918
Born: March 30, 1830 Bennekom, Netherlands
Died: September 15,1918 Sioux Center, Iowa
Cornelius Hulstein was born in Bennekom, Netherlands, March 30, 1830. He married Rijke Van Roekel in 1856. They lived together on a farm in the Netherlands for 16 years. Before leaving for America the following children were born: William, Gerrit who died in 1934, Steven and Johanna.
In April, 1871, the family left for America and landed in Pella, IA. Cornelia who died in 1913 was born in Pella. In May 1878 part of the family moved to a farm near Sioux Center and in June, William, the oldest son, moved to Sioux Center also. They traveled over very rough and narrow trails in a covered wagon to reach their destination.
The first place the family lived was in the "old town" about 80 rods west of the First Reformed Church. They lived on that farm for 3 years. During this time a church, store and a blacksmith shop were built. In 1879 the first year of their new adventure no crops were harvested. Grasshoppers and hail destroyed them. In the fall of 1880 an epidemic of diphtheria broke out and took the life of Johanna. The winter from 1880 to 1881 was very severe. Mountains of snow covered the ground and the weather was extremely cold, causing much hardship in the family.
Cornelius Hulstein and family lived in the old town for three years and in 1882 they moved to a farm one-half mile north of Sioux Center. The son Steven remained on this farm when Cornelius and his family moved to the home they built in town in 1889. They lived here one year and then moved to the home one-fourth mile north of Sioux Center, and it was here that they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Cornelius Hulstein passed away on January 4, 1911 and Mr. Cornelius Hulstein died on September 15, 1918.
Mr. and Mrs. Hulstein's five children were already mentioned. There were also 40 grandchildren, and over 100 great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY OF Gerrit Hulstein, Sr.
Mr. Hulstein succumbed to a heart attack Friday morning. He had put on his wraps and was just about to open the door preparatory to going to town for groceries when he collapsed and died without regaining consciousness. OBITUARY of Cornelia VerPloeg Mrs. Gerrit Hulstien
Hulstein, Cornelia (Verploeg) 1869-1940 later Mrs. A. Van Drimmelen
Mrs. A. Van Drimmelen passed away very suddenly at her home at about 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning, Nov. 14. She had passed her 71st birthday.
Mrs. A. Van Drimmelen, daughter of Koemad[?] Verploeg and Petertje de Kock was born south of Pella, Iowa on March 9, 1869. The family moved to Sioux County about 1845[??--probably should be 1875?].
In 1886 she married Gerrit Hulstein and settled on a farm 4-1/2 miles north and west of Sioux Center. Mr. Hulstein died Jan. 26, 1934. 9 children were born--all left to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving mother. On March 5, 1938 she married A. Van Drimmelen who is now left to mourn. The Lord has given, The Lord has taken, blessed be the name of the Lord. Our loss is her gain. She was a devout Christian woman, always wanted to do something for other people, never asking for anything, happy in the thought that she had a desire to do some thing for her Savior Jesus Christ.
So--Let us think of her faring on, as dear, in the love of there as the love of Here;
Think of her still as the same today; she is not dead--she is just away.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 18 at her home at one o'clock and at 1:30 o'clock at the Central Reformed Church with Rev. R. D. Meengs her pastor in charge. Interment was in Sioux Center cemetery.
Survivors are Mrs. Hattie Kastein, R. Rapids; Cornelius, Hull; Conrad, Carmel; Mrs. Peter Vos, William, Henry, Steven, Raymond, and Mrs. John Lehudis, all of Sioux Center. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. R. C. Jongewaard and Mrs. Dreka Wesselink. There are 51 grand-children and 17 great grand-children.
