Mulder, Jouke 1861-1925 and Taekje De Roos Family
This story was taken from the Sioux Center Centennial book page 459; and was submitted by Tillie Vander Brake. It was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg.
Jouke Mulder came to America in 1872 with his father Yge Y Mulder who was then 45 years old. His mother would have been 34 but she passed away in St. Anna Parochie. Jouke came with one older and four younger brothers and a little sister. Three of his brothers married Hoekstra sisters who were housekeepers for the family on the farm near Orange City. Jouke was 11 years old when they came to America. He was born May 20, 1861. On the 19th day of March Jouke married Taekje De Roos born March 23, 1866. She was 19 and he was 24. They lived on the farm near Taekje’s parents. It was a 5 minute distance between the two homes. Riemke born Dec. 8, 1886 and named after her Grandmother Mulder was three years old when she walked to her Grandparents J.W. De Roos, knocked on the door and called, “Riemke is here.” Her grandfather opened the door. She walked in and said she would like to stay and live with them. Her Grandfather De Roos was pleased to hear it. Arrangements were made to allow this. Riemke, who was later called Rena stayed until she was 13 years. Then she and her Grandfather De Roos moved in with her parents, Jouke and Taekje because her Grandmother Akka De Roos passed away July 4, 1900 at the age of 64. May 1901 Jouke and Taekje wrote to the Netherlands, “Father (J.W.) is still pretty well –walks from chair to couch – lays, sits, sleeps, reads, smokes.” Feb. 9, 1902 he passed away at the age of 85. He was mentally alert right to the end.
The other children in this Mulder family were: John born May 15, 1888, Agnes (De Zeeuw) born August 8, 1889, Daisy (Santema) born May 17, 1892, and Ernest born May 2, 1896.
Before the Jouke Mulder children were married they often had parties at their home and played many different games. One was button, button, who has the button. Jouke was tired so he went to bed but Taekje took part in the games. Daisy mentioned how much they enjoyed these times.
March 9, 1905 Rena was married with Henry Vande Brake. Henry was born March 14, 1878. Their son Eibert named after Henry’s father and born April 22, 1906 went into convulsions and died Feb. 1, 1907. The cause was unknown. He was in the high chair when his father walked through the door going out side. Then they smiled and waved at each other. That was on the day he died. He was 9 months old. The second Eibert was born to Henry and Rena September 22, 1907. Three girls and two boys followed: Tillie, Priscilla, Agnes, Jake, Henry.
Of the Mulders John married May 28, 1909 with Johanna Borgman who was born June 10, 1889; Agnes married on the 17th day of Feb. 1910 with John De Zeeuw who was born Aug. 14, 1887; Daisy married Dec. 3, 1914 with Henry Santema who was born July 13, 1890; and Ernest married the 4th day of Dec. 1919 with Margaret Van Deest who was born May 3, 1897. All were in the farming business. John died September 7, 1911. They had no children. Agnes died June 20, 1922. They had no children. Henry and Daisy Santema had four boys: Andrew, James, Bernard and John. March, 1948, Henry and Daisy moved to the Sioux Center house. Their children and grandchildren often visited them there. Bernard stopped in when delivering Old Home Bread to several towns including Sioux Center. They enjoyed the neighbor children. On April 18, 1964 Henry went fishing for the second time that day because one little boy felt bad he missed going. The two went and while sitting by the water Henry fell slowly on his back and died. The boy ran to the nearest farm house to get help. Ernest and Maggie’s children were: James (Jim), Jeanette, Josephus, Theron and Rodney. Ernest and Maggie moved to Sioux Center March 1, 1955.
In 1913 Jouke had a strong desire to visit St. Anna Parochie but Taekje would rather stay home. Jouke went and wrote to Taekje what an enjoyable time he was having. Taekje was very lonesome for Jouke and somebody wrote that to him. After that Jouke’s attitude was changed. He could not come right back because his ticket was for a certain time. They decided if they ever went again they would go together. They moved to Sioux Center before Daisy was married. Taekje and Daisy were living in town when Jouke was on that trip. Jouke died March 30, 1925; Rena died May 13, 1935; Taekje Sept. 19, 1939.
