This story is one of two stories on Jan Rozeboom born 1840 that was published in the Sioux Center Centennial book 1991 page 497. Both stories were included in the BIOS section because they were written by different authors and contained some different information.

This story was submitted to the book by Elizabeth Van Maanen and complied at the time by Wilma J. Vande Berg for the book. Submission for this BIOS section was transcribed by Beth De Leeuw.

Jan “John” Rozeboom was born in Elburg, Netherlands, on April 16, 1840 to Beert Rozeboom and Driesje Van Loo. On March 13, 1863 at the age of 22 years he married Hermina Schipper born in 1842 to Johannes Schipper and Aaltje Vis. Thirteen children were born to Jan and Hermina in the Netherlands, these were a son Beert, who died at 12 weeks of age, Beert, Johannes, Dries, Aaltje, Lambert, a child who died at birth, Cornelius, Lubbigtje, Driesje, Eibertje, and Hermina. On April 14, 1880 the mother Hermina Schipper Rozeboom died giving birth to a son Jan.

In 1881, Jan Rozeboom went to America with eight of his children, the oldest was 15 years old and the youngest was 3½ years old. He left two children in the Netherlands with his wife’s sister and husband, Egbert Dykhuizen and Johanna Schipper. The Egbert Dykhuizen family also came to Sioux Center shortly after that in 1882. The two children with the Dykhuizens were Dries and Jan. A son, Cornelius had died at a young age.

In 1882 Jan Rozeboom and his family of children moved on a farm belonging to John Vande Berg that was a mile west of Newkirk. In 1883 he moved to Welcome township and rented a small farm in the northwest corner of section 30. Here he broke prairie that became the Rozeboom homestead.

On August 20, 1884, John Rozeboom married Jannetje Hoksbergen and they were married for 45 years. Jan and Jannetje were the parents of eight children: Margaretha, Hendrik, Gerrit, Johanna, Cornelius, Ryk, Jennie and Minnie. On May 6, 1930 at over 90 years of age Jan Rozeboom died. All of his sixteen surviving children were present at his death. On March 16, 1951 Jannette Hoksbergen Rozeboom died. The 18 Rozeboom children that survived to adulthood are as follows:

Beert Rozeboom was born July 25, 1864 and he married Aartje Schoep. They were farmers near Sioux Center and the parents of seven children: Johanna (Mrs. John G. Schuiteman), Hermina (Mrs. Andrew Sanko), John B. Rozeboom married Margaret Kosters, Gertrude Rozeboom, Gerrit H. Rozeboom married Delia Hoffman, Cornelius Rozeboom, and Arthur Rozeboom married Johanna Wolfswinkel.

Johannes “Hannes” Rozeboom was born December 27, 1865 and he married Aaltje “Elle” Vande Berg. They were from Sioux Center and the parents of ten children, four of whom died in infancy, those that survived were as follows: John H. Rozeboom married Anna Kruizenga, Wilhelmina (Mrs. Jake G. Vermeer), Hermina (Mrs. Art E. Franken), Johanna (Mrs. John Cleveringa, Gerrit Rozeboom married Bertha Plette, and Elizabeth (Mrs. John B. Van Maanen).

Aaltje Rozeboom was born January 7, 1867 and married Lou Hoksbergen. They were from Lynden, WA, and the parents of five children: Hendrik Hoksbergen, Jan Hoksbergen married Tena Spoelstra, Hermina (Mrs. Evert G. Vermeer), Margeretha Hoksbergen, and Aalt Hoksbergen.

Dries “Andrew” Rozeboom was born May 2, 1868 and he married Gerdina Punt. In 1915 he married May Peters. They lived in Sebastopol, CA and one son was born to the first marriage and four children to his second marriage: Egbert Rozeboom married Ethel Savage, John D. Rozeboom married Althea Smith, Gerrit A. Rozeboom married Marcia Dickinson, Johanna (Mrs. Norman Coon) and Theodore Rozeboom’s wife was Charlotte.

Lambert Rozeboom was born May 17, 1870 and he married Mary Remmerde. They farmed near Sheldon, IA, and were the parents of ten children: John Rozeboom married Hattie Klein, Jana (Mrs. Nick Feekes), Hermina (Mrs. Frank Roetman), Lammert Rozeboom married Jennie Klein, Mary (Mrs. Jacob Roghair), Bert Rozeboom married Zelma Wolf, Robert Rozeboom married Leola Webster, Petra Nella (Mrs. Henry Reekers – Mrs. Spencer Roorda), Allie (Mrs. Frank Oordt), and Herbert Rozeboom.

Lubbigtje “Lillian” Rozeboom was born June 5, 1874 and she married Barney Kempers. They were farmers by Sioux Center and the parents of eight children: Dena (Mrs. Bert Broek), Minnie (Mrs. Nick Buyert), Johanna (Mrs. Martin Wyngaarden), Allie (Mrs. Harm Holleman), Garret Kempers married Laura Ford, Betty (Mrs. John Geels), John James Kempers, and Albert Kempers married Ann Kalkhoven.

Driesje “Lizzie” Rozeboom was born November 9, 1875 and she married Gerrit Vande Berg. They were farmers in the Sioux Center area and the parents of five children: Wilhelmina (Mrs. Richard Smith), John G. Vande Berg married Mabel Beernink, Alyce (Mrs. Raymond Lubbers), Gerrit Vande Berg married Ella Beernink, and Bert G. Vande Berg married Jeane De Jong.

Elbertje “Anna” Rozeboom was born January 8, 1877 and she married John Kempers. They farmed northeast of Sioux Center and were the parents of ten children: Dena (Mrs. William A. Schuiteman), Gerrit Kempers married Sadie Scholten, John R. Kempers married Mabel Van Dyke, Bert Kempers married Harriet Heneveld, Minnie (Mrs. Bert Mouw), Johanna (Mrs. William Beernink), Bernard Rozeboom married Marjorie McLaughlin, Lillian (Mrs. Richard Warntjes) Betty (Mrs. Edward Heneveld), and Marion Kempers married Geneva Roetman.

Hermina “Minnie” Rozeboom was born March 30, 1878 and married Engbert Vander Hoop. They were from Redlands, CA, and the parents of two children: Ben Vander Hoop and John Vander Hoop. Minnie died in 1902 and Engbert married Minnie De Lange and had two children: Gerrett Vander Hoop and James Vander Hoop.

John D. Rozeboom was born April 13, 1880 and he married Cena Vander Ploeg. They were farmers near Sioux Center and Steen, MN, and the parents of eleven children: Bert Rozeboom married Hattie Van Batavia, Charles Rozeboom married Margaret De Noble, Johanna (Mrs. Wayne Vicklund), Nickolas Rozeboom married Artie Hasselman, John H. Rozeboom died 1926, Tena (Mrs. Reynold Sasher), Cynthia (Mrs. Milton Bonnema), Henry Rozeboom married Olive Sheffield, Minnie (Mrs. Wilbur Ross), Winifred (Mrs. Bert Boeve) and Andrew Rozeboom married Mildred Ten Louw.

The following children were of Jan Rozeboom’s second marriage to Jannetje Hoksbergen:

Margaretha “Maggie” Rozeboom was born August 16, 1885 and married Charles Vande Berg. They were from Paonia and Crawford, CO, and the parents of eleven children: Tracey (Mrs. Earl Bushy), John A. Vande Berg married Ada Blankenship Campbell, Andrew Vande Berg married Kloe Keele, Lester Vande Berg married Helen Waddingham, Berrit Vande Berg died 1953, Jeanette died 1916, Charles Vande Berg married Vivian Sickler, Theodore Vande Berg married Lucie Fisk Wood, Wesley Vande Berg married Betty Kaskie, Marilyn (Mrs. Kenneth Hilton), and Ruby (Mrs. Ted Crawford).

Henry Rozeboom was born August 13, 1887 and married Jen Kruizenga. He was a barber in Sioux Center and later lived in Lynden WA. They had one son, Clarence Rozeboom. After Jen died Henry remarried Harriet Noteboom.

Gerrit J. Rozeboom was born January 4, 1890 and he married Jen Rens. They were farmers north of Sioux Center on the homestead of Gerrit’s father. (Ken Den Herder lives there now.) they were the parents of three children: John G. Rozeboom married Dena Klein, Margaret (Mrs. Julius Hop) and Colleen (Mrs. Gerald Korver).

Johanna Rozeboom was born February 6, 1892 and married Henry Wm. Vermeer. They were farmers north of Sioux Center and the parents of nine children: Henry A. Vermeer married Leona Peelen, John L. Vermeer married Ada Punt, Elmer H. Vermeer married Harriet De Boer, Bernard M. Vermeer died 1943 in WW II, Gerald J. Vermeer married Janeva Vander Weide, Jeneva (Mrs. Marion Vander Pol), Helen Vermeer died 1927, Kenneth H. Vermeer married Jean Rens and Helen J. (Mrs. Gerald Nettinga).

Cornelius “Neal” Rozeboom was born September 12, 1895 and married Wilhelmina Cleveringa. They farmed near Carmel IA and were the parents of four children: Jeanette (Mrs. Harry Van Voorst), Allene (Mrs. Elmer Van’t Hul), Joyce (Mrs. William De Groot) and Willie Rozeboom married Shirley Van Putten.

Ryk “Richard” Rozeboom was born March 22, 1898 and married Marie Brummel. They were from Denver CO, and the parents of two children: Betty (Mrs. Ben De Jong – Mrs. Paul Buys) and Elaine (Mrs. Paul Kaus).

Jennie Rozeboom was born May 22, 1901 and she died 1947.

Hermina “Minnie” was born April 30, 1904 and she married Glenn Neifert of Indianola, IA, and were the parents of three children: Leualma (Mrs. Wendell Fedders), Genevieve (Mrs. Richard Bridges) and Vernal (Mrs. Roland Renard).

Jan “John” Rozeboom had over 105 direct grandchildren many of whom are of the age that they are great grandparents today or deceased. His total descendants to this day would be numerous.

John Rozeboom - Funeral services in memory of John(Jan) Rozeboom, pioneer Sioux Center resident were held Friday afternoon. May 16th, at the home and First Reformed church, in charge of Rev. L. Brunsting. Many came to show their respect for the venerable man, who passed his 90th birthday last month, and is survived by a family of sixteen children.
He was born at Oldebroek, the Netherlands, on April 16th 1840. At the age of 23 he married Hermina Schipper. Ten children were born to the couple of whom eight are living: Bert and Johannes. Sioux Center; Andrew, Sebastapol, Calif.; Lammert, Sheldon; Mrs. Barney Kempers Sioux Center, Mrs G. J. Vande Berg, Orange City; Mrs. John Kempers, Sioux Center; John, Steen, Minnesota. Mrs. L,. Hoksbergen, the third child, and Mrs. E. VanderHoop, the ninth, have passed on.
Mrs. Rozeboom died in the year 188O and the following year Mr. Rozeboom and his family came to the United States, settling on a farm near Newkirk. Later they moved to the Sioux Center vicinity but for the past 20 years have lived in Sionx Center. In 1882 Mr. Rozeboom married Jannetje Hokshergen. Eight children were horn to them, namely: Mrs. Chas. Vande Berg, Crawford, Colorardo; Henry J., Mrs. H. W. Vermeer, Gerrit and Neal, Sioux Center; Reverend Richard Rozeboom of Denver. Colorado: Miss Jennie at home; Mrs. G. Nyfort, Ogden, Iowa. All sixteen children were present for the services.
Mr. Rozeboom was an elder in the First Reformed church for 20 years and long a teacher in the Sunday School, where his Influence for good was felt for many years. Family and friends will ever revere his memory.

AGED WOMAN DIES
Mrs J. Rozeboom, one of the Sioux Centers oldest residents, passed away at the home of herdaughter Mr and Mrs H. W. Vermeer on Friday morning March 16. She would have been 90 years old on the 5th of April. She had been down in bed for the past several weeks, and suffered a stroke on Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. Rozeboom had the largest family in this vicinity, having 450 people in her family. She had 8 children, 10 step children, 150 grandchildren, 229 great grandchildren and 45 great great grandchildren. Born at Gelderland, Netherland, she came to America at the age of nine years with her parents Mr and Mrs Henry Hoksbergen. They settled at Pella living there for 14 years, and then came to Sioux County where she spent the remainder of her life.
On the 20th of August, 1884, she married John Rozeboom who at that time was a widower with ten children ranging in age from five to twenty years. Besides being a mother to these children, she also had eight of her own. The children are Maggie (Mrs Charlie Vander Berg) of Crawford, Colo., Henry of Lynden, Wash., Gerrit of Orange City, Johanna (Mrs H. W. Vermeer) of Sioux Center, Neal of Sioux Center, Rev. Richard of Knoxville,, Iowa, Jennie who died on April 16, 1947 and Minnie (Mrs Glenn Niefert) of Red Oak, Ia. The step children are Beert of Sioux Center, Mannes who died on Oct. 24, 1949, Allie, (Mrs Louis Hoksbergen) deceased Andrew of Sebastebol, CA, Lillian (Mrs Barney Kempers) of Sioux Center, Lizzie (Mrs. Gerrit Vander Berg) of Orange City, deceased, Annie (Mrs. John Kempers) of Sioux Center, Minnie (Mrs. E. Vander Hoop) deceased, and John of Steen, MN.
Mr. Rozeboom passed away in the year of 1930 at the age of 90 years. After his death she and her daughter Jennie lived together until the latter’s death and Mrs. Rozeboom then went to make her home with her daughter the H. E. Vermeer family. She was alert until the time of her earth. She enjoyed her family and friends visiting with her and attended the meetings of her Aid Society until just a few weeks before her passing. She kept a strict record of her family, jotting down each member in her little book.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon March 20 at the Vermeer home and at the First Reformed church where she had been a very active member for many years. Rev. P. A. De Jong officiated and burial took place in the family plot at the Sioux Center community cemetery.
