Education: Attended the Exira Community Schools, Exira, IA, and graduated with the Class of 1953. In high school, she was a member of the journalism club, F.H.A. annual staff, mixed chorus, girls glee club, pep club, was on the girls’ basketball team, and was in the school's drama productions, having the lead role in the play during her junior year. Additionally, she was a member of the Order of the Rainbow for Girls. In 1953, Phyllis attended Iowa State University, Ames, IA, and was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. After her marriage and Chuck’s discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps, they both attended Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa), Cedar Falls, IA, where she received a bachelor’s degree in vocational homemaking in 1960.

Religious affiliation: Baptized at the Exira (IA) Christian Church; as an adult, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, IA, and was a member of Hannah Circle church group there

Employment: After moving to various towns in Iowa with Chuck’s teaching jobs, they finally settled in Harlan, IA, where Phyllis joined the teaching staff for Harlan Community Schools. She taught 6th grade and 4th grade for a combination of 27 years until her retirement in 1995.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, Order of Eastern Star; member, the Harlan Literary Club; member, educational society Delta Kappa Gamma; former member, Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association. Was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, particularly Bridge.
