Survived by: Children, Cheryl (spouse, Lyle Jr.) Hamrick of LaVista, NE, Gary (spouse, Ruangkaew) Bargenquast of Chiang Rai, Thailand, and Linda (spouse, Rob) Van Wey of Liverpool, NY; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Friedrich (“Fred”) and Margret Bargenquast; wife, LaVonne; daughter, Connie; son, Dennis; son-in law, Richard Crawley; brothers, Otto, Elmer, Frank, Roy and Fritz; sisters, Leona, Viola, Ruby and Margret

Religious affiliation: Member, Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca, IA, where Leo had taught Sunday School classes, served as a Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the church council.

Military service: Jan. 1942 -Oct. 1945; enlisted in the U.S. Navy; attended boot camp in San Diego, CA, and was then drafted into the Armed Guard as a Signalman. Leo spent some 37 months on duty in the South Pacific serving on two tankers, one Dutch troop transport and one cargo ship

Marriage: LaVonne Comstock; May 29, 1945; Algiers Naval Station, New Orleans, LA

Employment: After his military service, Leo worked at the Purina Feed Store in Irwin, IA. In 1953, Leo was transferred to Van Nostrand Grain Company in Avoca, IA, and was there for 25 years. In 1972, Leo began working as a weight enforcement officer, first with the Iowa Commerce Commission and then for the Iowa Department of Transportation after the departments merged in 1975. Leo worked for the DOT for 16 years before retiring in 1988.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, playing pool and traveling; was a member of the local American Legion and VFW Posts for more than 75 years
