Education: Graduated from Portsmouth (IA) high school with the Class of 1952

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Portsmouth, IA; member, Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years, and served on the parish council

Military service: Drafted into the U. S. Army in May 1956 and was stationed in Germany for one year. He was honorably discharged May 1958

Marriage: Alma Kramer; May 4, 1954; location not provided

Employment: Worked for the Shelby County (IA) Road Dept as a grader operator and foreman for 55 years

Hobbies/Interests: Served on the Portsmouth (IA) Town Council for 17 years and then as mayor for another 17 years; served on the volunteer fire department for 30 years; enjoyed gardening, (mostly flowers, strawberries & watermelons), woodworking (barns, corn cribs, bridges, doll houses, wishing wells) and traveling (bus trips all over the US, Ireland, Italy, Alaska, Germany, Switzerland, France, the Holy Land, and more) and to Yankee stadium 5 times.
