Imelda was born in Panama, Iowa on September 12, 1938, to Alfred and Romana (Goeser) Schwery. She grew up on a farm in Defiance, Iowa with her 5 siblings. She met John Laube in Harlan, Iowa and married in Manilla, Iowa on June 17, 1961. Shortly thereafter, Imelda and her husband John moved to California and started a family.
