Education: Attended Oak Street and Hoover School, both in Council Bluffs, IA; he then attended Abraham Lincoln High School, Council Bluffs, IA and graduated with the Class of 1958. He went on and attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA for 1 year before transferring to Creighton University in Omaha, NE until 1962. He graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary of Science in Indianapolis, IN in 1963.

Employment: After finishing school, Richard became a licensed funeral director in the state of Iowa in 1965 and in the state of Nebraska in 1968. He started his funeral career in Council Bluffs, IA before moving his family to Harlan, IA where he worked at Pauley Funeral Home. In 1975, he purchased the funeral home from Clay Pauley. In 2003, he partnered with his son Michael and added the Jones name to become the Pauley Jones Funeral Home; that same year, he purchased the Knutson Funeral Home in Avoca, IA. Richard retired in 2016.

Hobbies/Interests: Was very active in his community and earned many achievements: In 1968, he was President of the Council Bluffs (IA) Jaycees and was awarded the Outstanding Man of the Year in Council Bluffs and for the state of Iowa in 1970; was granted a Rotary Scholarship in 1971, which allowed him to spend 6 months in Australia; served on many boards including the Shelby County Health Foundation, the policy board of National Funeral Directors Association, and for the WWII National Monument Committee in Washington D.C.; served as president for Kiwanis, the Harlan Area Chamber of Commerce, and for the Iowa Funeral Directors Association. In 2000, he was named Harlan Citizen of the Year. Was an enthusiastic fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team; enjoyed his sports cars and time spent mowing his yard. Richard and Christine enjoyed taking trips with friends or spending evenings playing cards or entertaining at their home.
