Education: Attended and graduated from Harlan (IA) High School, Class of 1965; he was homecoming king in his senior year and earned many athletic honors during his high school years. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University for a short time before enlisting in the military. After completing his military service, he returned to complete his education and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1974. He acquired his master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State in 1984.

Military service: U. S. Air Force, serving in Viet Nam; honorably for 4 years

Employment: After completing his military service and returning to college, in 1975, he was employed by the Bedford (IA) Community School District and made his mark both in the community and as the football coach. He earned many honors during his tenure there including Iowa District Coach of the Year in 1983, 1986 and 1993, the Walt Feigal Coaching for Character Award, induction into the Iowa Football Hall of Fame in 2000, being named coach for South Iowa in the 2010 Shrine Bowl and was awarded the Keys to the City of Bedford. He led the football team to the Iowa Class 1A Football Championship in 1992.
