Education: Attended elementary school in Monroe Township and graduated from Walnut Community School with the Class of 1946. After graduation, he attended a 1-month program in Denison, IA and received his teaching certificate.

Religious affiliation: Devoted member of Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, IA, and was on the original committee to build the current church; he served on several committees for over 55 years

Marriage: Luella Madden; Nov. 10, 1949; First Congregational Church, Avoca, IA

Employment: When he finished his teaching certificate after high school, he taught school for a year; he then became employed by the City of Avoca, IA before owning the Y Station in Avoca for 1 year. The remainder of his life was spent doing what he loved, farming. He worked for a few farmers in the area before settling on the Hansen Family Farm where he farmed for most of his life, farming different crops, laying hens, milking cows, and farrowing pigs. Don continued to work other jobs as well to provide for his family and was mostly known for his years of custom baling for farmers in the area. He retired from farming at the age of 87.

Hobbies/Interests: Loved everything baseball: playing it, teaching it to his kids and grandkids, and watching it. He was the left fielder for the Jacksonville baseball team in the Iowa Western league.
