Survived by: Wife of 53 years, Bette Graybill of Shelby, IA; daughters, Nikki Cohrs of Omaha, NE, and Krista (spouse, Chris) Austin of Papillion, NE; grandchildren, Alivia, Addison and Asher Austin; sister, Norma Gahm of Council Bluffs, IA; sister-in-law, Marsha Hursey; nephews, Rodney Graybill and Dave Hursey; niece, Shaunda Smith; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Wilbur and Vera (Edwards) Graybill; brother, Wayne; sister, Joyce; mother-in-law, Marcella Jones; father-in-law, George Jones

Education: Attended Tennant (IA) School through the 8th grade and then attended Shelby (IA) Consolidated School and graduated with the Class of 1963. After graduation he attended Clarinda Community College, Clarinda, IA for 1 year.

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed at the Tennant (IA) Methodist Church and then transferred to the Shelby (IA) United Methodist Church

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1966; during his military service, he spent 1 year in Vietnam.

Marriage: Bette Zolk; Sep. 16, 1967; Shelby Presbyterian Church, Shelby, IA

Employment: After Derald finished his military service, they aa farmed for 39 years, raising cattle, hogs, corn and soybeans. He retired from farming when he was 60.

Hobbies/Interests: Was a 47-year member of the Shelby (IA) Legion Post 240; served on the Shelby Community School District Board of Directors from 1982-1991; in 1986 he was presented with the Farm Citizen Community Service Award; in 1998, Derald received the Region 5 Iowa Soil Conservation Award; for 18 years he was a member of the 8 ball aviation club and they worked the flight breakfast for many years. In the early 1990’s, Derald began pursuing his private pilot’s license and succeeded in doing so in 1993. He then purchased 32004, the “Other Woman,” in his life. With Bette, they made flights to Louisiana, Chicago, and the Lake of the Ozarks. Alone or with his son-in-law, Chris, Derald flew to Oshkosh, WI, for the EAA AirVenture. Derald’s next goal was to own a Harley Davidson motorcycle. This new venture them to Arkansas, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Beartooth Highway, Wisconsin, and Sturgis. To celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary, Derald and Bette drove the Harley on the circle tour around Lake Superior. His next goal was to build his own airplane. After 2-1/2 years, he was able to accomplish it and 12435 was born. He especially enjoyed attending his children and grandchildrens’ activities.
