Education: Attended Pleasant #7 country school near Avoca, IA during his elementary years; he went to high school in Avoca and graduated with the Class of 1947, driving the school bus during his senior year.

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church; was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca, IA. He served on the church council and was a Sunday school superintendent.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Air Force on Dec. 27, 1950. His basic training at San Antonio, TX was followed by stops at bases in Biloxi, MS, and San Angelo, TX. He then served overseas with the Shoran Beacon Squadron in Seoul, South Korea. He returned to the U. S. in June 1953, for his last USAF assignment in Rapid City, SD.

Marriage: Dolores Johansen; March 23, 1952; Bethany Lutheran Church, Kimballton, IA

Employment: Farmer; he received the East Pottawattamie Soil and Water Conservation Farm of the Year Award in 2009: he believed in leaving the land in better condition than he found it. They retired in 1990, but he stayed busy helping his boys with fieldwork, working seasonally at CPS, and making deliveries for Avoca Building with Gerald Peck.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, East Pottawattamie Extension Council, the Salem Lutheran Board, the Fair Board, and the Avoca American Legion, once serving as commander; enjoyed playing cards and traveling, and had special memories of the Lake Okoboji trips.
