June's Obituary

June Verlee, daughter of Everett R. and Laura Olive (McGee) Vest, was born September 22, 1928, in Polk Township, south of Irwin in Shelby County, Iowa. She grew up in Defiance and there she graduated from high school in 1946. During school, June detasseled corn and sorted eggs at the creamery.

June was married to Bruce Gaskill and two sons, Ron and Tom, were born to this marriage. Bruce passed away on September 19, 1955.

On November 12, 1956, June was united in marriage with Walter Eugene Murray. A son Dan and twin daughters, Sally and Susan, were born to Walt and June’s union. They initially lived on the Murray farm and later bought their home on the south edge of Irwin. June worked at local cafés and the Irwin Meat Locker before joining the Irwin Community Schools as a janitor, bus driver and cook.

Throughout the years, June was a member of the United Methodist Church in Irwin, Irwin Ambulance, Greenridge Steam and Antique Club, American Legion Auxiliary, craft club and the Irwin Ladies. June enjoyed quilting, embroidery, canning and baking. In her spare time, she cherished the time spent visiting and having coffee. June and Walt enjoyed traveling and camping with family and friends.

After retiring June and Walt first moved to a home on Eva Street in Irwin and in the summer of 2016 they both moved to the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in Manilla, IA. Walt passed away on January 23, 2019. On Friday, November 8, 2019, June also passed away there at the age of 91.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Bruce Gaskill in 1955 and Walter Murray in 2019; twin daughters Sally and Susan Murray; and brothers Howard, Dale and Gene Vest.

June is survived by her children: Bruce “Ron” Gaskill and wife Carole of Coralville; Thomas Gaskill and wife Mary of Tucson, AZ; Dan Murray and wife Tammy of Harlan; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; other relatives, friends and their Manilla Manor family.
