Education: Attended country school in Harrison County, IA until 1936 when her family moved outside Irwin, IA; she graduated from Irwin (IA) High School, Class of 1939; she then enrolled in Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA to obtain her teachers certificate, and in the summers, she took classes at Simpson College, Indianola, IA. She taught in the rural schools 6 years and for 1 year in consolidated school.

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed at the Woodbine (IA) Methodist Church; member, Irwin Church for 34 years; after moving to Harlan, IA, they became members of First United Methodist Church there. She held various offices in the United Methodist Women's group, and received the Special Recognition Pin from both churches.
