Education: attended rural schools Hamlin #9, #4, and #5, Audubon County, IA, and then graduated from the Audubon High School, Class of 1956

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at the Hamlin Lutheran Church, Hamlin, IA; member there until he transferred his membership to the Exira (IA) Lutheran Church when the Hamlin Church closed.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Army Reserves, 1958 - 1964

Marriage: Charlotte Savage; Jan. 17, 1964; Hamlin Lutheran Church, Hamlin, IA

Employment: After completing high school, he helped his father operate the family farm, operated his own custom anhydrous application business, and helped other farmers. After his marriage, he continued farming and raising livestock, milk cows, and then sheep. He sold his sheep in 2015 due to failing health, and still maintained his property until Spring 2017.

Hobbies/Interests: member, Farm Bureau, Pheasants Forever, and the Audubon County Conservation Club (Izaak Walton League); enjoyed assisting with the 4-H sheep entries at the Audubon County (IA) Fair for years; was a commissioner for the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) from 1974 through 2017. Through the years, he received many awards and citations and was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015 and received the Environmental Leader Award the same year at the Iowa State Fair.
