Funeral services: Saturday, April 22, 2017; United Methodist Church, Olivet, SD; burial with military rites was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, SD

Survived by: Children, Cindy (spouse, Dean) Lefeber of Harlan, IA and Brad (spouse, Michelle) Johnson of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson, Haley Johnson, Sarah Lefeber, and Tyler (spouse, Jana) Lefeber; mother, Opal (nee Wintersteen) Johnson of Orange City, IA; sister-in-law Barbara Bloes; brothers-in- law, Don Guthmiller of Orange City, IA and Charles Zeeb of Sioux Falls, SD

Predeceased by: Wife, Joan (deceased in 1998); father, Elmer “Swede” Johnson; sisters, Sally Guthmiller and Donna Zeeb; brother-in-law, Richard Powell

Education: attended Olivet (SD) Grade School and graduated from Menno High School, Class of 1954; he earned his bachelor’s degree at South State Teacher’s College in Springfield, MO. in 1960; he then went on to earn his Master’s degree at the University of South Dakota in 1967 and earned his Vocational Certificate at the University of Northern Iowa in 1968.

Religious affiliation: baptized at Olivet (SD) United Methodist Church; he later attended again after he moved back to the area after retiring.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Army in Sep. 1956, and completed basic training at Fort Chaffer, AR; he was permanently stationed at Fort Carson, CO., and honorably discharged in June 1958

Marriage: Joan G. Hesla; June 24, 1960; Scotland, SD

Employment: After earning his bachelor’s degree, he taught in Ft. Pierre, SD for 2 years and then spent the next 4 years teaching in Melvin, IA. From 1967 to 1997, Larye taught Vocational Education in Harlan, IA.

Hobbies/Interests: Fishing; hunting; going to the family cabin in northern Minnesota; had a great appreciation for the outdoors, and, in retirement, spent his summers working as a campground manager at Riverside Campground on the Missouri River near Platte, SD. He also had a hobby of designing and making signs for Riverside Campground. Since 2001, he also took part in the Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park and was a volunteer park ranger in the Black Hills.
