Thelma Mohr
January 2, 1926 - December 6, 2016

Thelma Jane, daughter of George Thomas “Tom” and Martha (Parker) Doyel, was born January 2, 1926 on farm in Shelby County, Iowa. She grew upon the farm helping with all aspects of farm work, including driving teams of horses. Thelma graduated from Manning High School with the Class of 1943.

After completing her Normal Training she taught rural school for three years. During World War II Thelma worked in a defense plant in St. Louis, Missouri. On June 20, 1945, Thelma was united in marriage with Wade “Bud” Mohr at Manning. After his honorable discharge from the United States Navy in December of 1945, he returned to Manning where the couple made their home and started Mohr Trucking. Thelma was bookkeeper for the business. In 1968, they purchased McMahon Feed and Seed where Thelma drove and loaded trucks and was office manager. Each spring she enjoyed selling her vegetable and flower plants at the store. At age 63 she went back to school at Des Moines Area Community College and earned her registered nursing degree. Her seven years as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines were very fulfilling.

Thelma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was a Trustee. After serving on the Manning City Council she ran for mayor. Thelma was a life time member and served as president of both the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. She became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in September 2009, moving to St. Anthony’s Nursing Home in Carroll in 2013. She died there on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 4 days.

Bud and Thelma raised their seven children in Manning. She was very involved with her children’s activities and served as a den mother for the Cub Scouts. Her talents as a wonderful cook, accomplished seamstress and love of gardening were shared with friends and family. She enjoyed all family gatherings and especially camping with her children and grandchildren. Her loving actions and gentle soul will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Besides her husband, Thelma was preceded in death by her son Scott Mohr; siblings: George Doyel; Elmer and Leona Doyel; Les and Mildred Doyel; Mildred and Virgil Crouch; and siblings-in-law Wayne Schroeder and Marilyn and Roy Whited.

She is survived by three daughters: Gloria Aron (Michael) of Lincoln, NE; Sandi Good (Jim) of Northridge, CA and Sherri Steffes (Gene) of Manning; three sons: Larry Mohr (Donna) of Mesa, AZ; Doug Mohr of Aspinwall; and Steve Mohr (Pam) of Glidden; nineteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister Hazel Meggers of Council Bluffs; sister-in-law: Barb Doyel of Manning; Marjorie Whited (John) of Denison; Lila Schroeder of Manning and Iva Hinze (Orville) of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Thelma’s family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her honor be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
