He received additional flight training in San Diego, CA, before being stationed in Japan and serving as a helicopter pilot on the USS Midway. Doug retired on August 31, 2011 from that same ship 24 years later and moved to Irwin, IA. He most recently flew as an independent contractor in Afghanistan and Africa until July of 2015.
