Education: attended Greely Township Country School #1 in Shelby County (IA) until grade 6; he then went to the Manilla Community School, graduating with the Class of 1963. He was active in 4-H and FFA in high school.

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Irwin, IA, where he remained a lifelong member
