July 26, 1925 - July 18, 2011

Howard Dean, son of Homer DeWalter and Adda Beulah (Olson) Clark, was born July 26, 1925 in rural Iowa. He grew up on the family farm north east of Irwin. Howard attended rural school and then graduated from Irwin High School in 1942. After completing his education he worked with his dad and brother on the farm.

On February 20, 1949, Howard was united in marriage with Marianne Blackman by her brother Rev. Clarence Blackman. Two children were born to this union. The family made their home in the Irwin area eventually settling on the Clark family farm where Howard had grown up. Howard was a farmer and also engaged in local trucking.

Howard was a member of the Irwin United Methodist Church. He was very involved in the Greenridge Steam and Gas Antique Show over the years. He and his wife enjoyed music together and often ‘jammed’ at local music festivals. He was an avid hunter of various game, enjoyed gardening, woodworking and other crafts.

Howard became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in October of 2007 where he participated in many of the activities. His wife Marianne died on December 22, 2010 shortly after moving to the Manilla Manor. Howard’s health started to deteriorate several months before his death on Monday, July 18, 2011, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 22 days.
