Funeral services: Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, IA; Pastor Steven Chellew officiated. Burial was at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA.

Survived by: brother, Mike Sorensen (spouse, Laura) of Dow City, IA; niece, Amy (spouse, Craig) Crilly of Harlan, IA; other relatives and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Robert "Rusty" and Dorothy (nee Schneider) Sorensen

Education: attended school in Harlan (IA) and graduated from Harlan Community High School, Class of 1970. While in the service, Bill also attended Central Michigan University where he received his Masters in Psychology.

Military service: After high school, Bill joined the U.S. Army where he served overseas in Thailand, Germany and Egypt. While serving his country, Bill was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaves, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal, among others. He received his honorable discharge on June 30, 1990.

Employment: After his military service, Bill returned to Harlan and began working at CDS. Bill then began working for the Papillion-LaVista Schools in Omaha, NE and later took the position of Veteran’s Affairs Officer for Shelby County, IA. Bill took great pride in his country and assisting veterans throughout Shelby County. He was instrumental in bringing the Vietnam Memorial Wall traveling exhibit to Harlan and worked countless hours raising funds. Bill then worked for a short while at Mickel’s Restaurant in Harlan.

Hobbies/Interests: Bill was also a proud member of the Earling American Post No. 615.
