Born: Aug. 29, 1918, on the Loy Family farm about two miles south of Avoca while her dad was away serving in the Army during World War I

Died: Dec. 16, 2007 at Elm Crest Retirement Community, Harlan, IA

Funeral services: Thursday, Dec. 19, 2007, Trinity Lutheran Church, Avoca, IA; Pastor Dennis Reich officiated. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, IA.

Survived by: Husband of 64 years, Mervin Schaaf of Harlan, IA; son, Doug Schaaf (spouse, Judy) of Seattle, WA; son-in-law, John Gilliland of Harlan, IA; sister, Wanda Chandler of Omaha, NE; 2 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends

Predeceased by: Parents, James and Ida R. (nee Loy) Chandler; daughter, Janelle Gilliland; brothers, Dean and Norman Chandler; sister, Elaine Anderson

Education: attended country school through Grade 8 and graduated from the Hancock (IA) High School, where she was very active in school activities, including basketball, class plays and glee club. She then attended Simpson College for 2 years, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Religious affiliation: baptized member of the Hancock Methodist Church, Hancock, IA, and was active in the young peoples’ organizations; as an adult, was a faithful member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and was very active in the women’s organizations and had also served as past president.

Marriage: Mervin Schaaf; Aug. 29, 1943; location not provided

Employment: Following college, Noyon was employed as a secretary at the Brandes Insurance Agency in Avoca, IA. After their wedding, Mervin and Noyon lived on the Schaaf family farm where they ran a hog operation; they retired in 1980.

Hobbies/Interests: As a young girl, she was very active in 4-H and won many awards on both the county and state levels. For a number of years, she was a 4-H leader and was an honorary member of the East Pottawattamie County 4-H Committee. She was also a member and past matron of the Avoca Chapter of Eastern Star; was Mother Advisor of the Avoca Chapter of Rainbow for Girls; served on the Harlan Hospital Auxiliary Board and was also a member of Avoca Garden Club. She was a woman of deep religious faith, who worked hard and always cared for others.
