Born: Sept. 17, 1924, on the family farm southwest of Jacksonville, IA

Died: Febr. 22, 2007, from advanced prostate cancer (diagnosed June 2002)

Funeral services: Saturday, Febr. 24, 2007, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Jacksonville, IA; Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated. Burial, with Military Rites conducted by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150, was at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, IA.

Survived by: Sons, Steve (spouse, Tamara) Petersen, Jeffrey Petersen (spouse, Jayne), and James Petersen, all of Harlan, IA; grandchildren, Sara, Olivia, Jack, and Thomas; sister, Lotus Mumm of Council Bluffs, IA; special companion, Betty Williams of Harlan, IA; nieces; nephews; other family and many friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Peter and Alta (nee Hansen) Petersen; wife of 50 years, Jean (deceased June 16, 1997)

Education: attended Jacksonville No. 4 School (Shelby County, IA) until moving to Poplar (Shelby County, IA) for two years while his parents ran the country store. During that time, Bob attended Polk Country School. In 1933, the family moved back to the family farm and Bob once again attended Jacksonville No. 4 until Grade 8.

Religious affiliation: Baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, and was a lifelong member, serving on various positions of the church council including president, deacon, and treasurer.

Military service: Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. Bob was stationed overseas, spending time in the Asian front on the USS Thuvan. Bob was a Seaman 1st class who worked as a radar operator.

Marriage: Jean Alice Jacobsen; September 26, 1946; Bethel Baptist Church, Harlan, IA

Employment: self-employed farmer, raising cattle and growing crops

Hobbies/Interests: Bob was a kind and honorable man; he was proud of his farm, his family, his sons, his grandchildren, and his friends. He loved planting lots of sweet corn and giving it away to all his friends. As a little boy, he purchased 100 pine trees through the mail order and some are still alive on the farm.
