Funeral services: Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, March 5, 2008, St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Panama, IA; Rev. David Muenchrath officiated. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama, IA.

Survived by: Children, Mary Patricia Leuschen of Omaha, NE; Beth Muenchrath (spouse, Roger Erpelding) of Des Moines, IA; Alice (spouse, Earl) West of Ashland, NE; Tim Oppold of Panama and friend Debbie Garrett of Dunlap, IA; and Frank Oppold (spouse, Joanne) of Dunlap, IA; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends

Predeceased by: parents, Theodore and Bertha (nee Huetteman) Stessman; 11 of her brothers and sisters; husband, Franklin (deceased Nov. 17, 2002); son-in-law, Jim Leuschen

Education: attended St. Mary’s Catholic schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1932; attended Mt. St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS and University of Iowa at Cedar Falls, IA.

Religious affiliation: baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, IA.

Marriage: Franklin Oppold, August 17, 1942, St. Patrick’s Church, Missouri Valley, IA

Employment: taught school for 3 years in country school and 6 years in the Defiance (IA) public schools

Hobbies/Interests: Actively involved in church and civic activities: she served on the first St. Mary’s parish council, on the school board, and on the regional school board. Member of the Community Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Devoted enthusiast of local history and genealogy, including serving as chairman of the Panama Centennial History Book in 1984. Was honored as Panama’s "Citizen of the Year” in 1960, and, in 2006, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce named her “Citizen of the Years.”
