Pauline Teresa Mueller - 86

Pauline Teresa Sasse Mueller, daughter of Rosellen (Hanton) Sasse and Fred Sasse, was born April 3, 1925 in Griswold, Iowa. Pauline attended school in Griswold and graduated from Griswold High School in 1946 where she especially enjoyed band and music activities. Following graduation, Pauline worked at the Griswold State Bank until she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Mueller on January 1, 1948 in Red Oak, Iowa.

Pauline and Ken began their life together in Davenport, Iowa where he was a student at Palmer Chiropractic College. They moved to Harlan in 1949 when Ken graduated and opened his own chiropractic office. Pauline was a major support in the establishment and growth of this practice. She was also actively involved in Ken’s local, state and national political activities, particularly during the years he served as Harlan’s mayor.

Pauline was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. She was involved in many church ministries including assisting with funeral dinners. She was especially honored to be invited to become one of the first Eucharistic Ministers in the Des Moines Catholic Diocese.

For more than thirty years she served as volunteer coordinator for Harlan’s Mobile Meals. She also worked at the blood bank and with the Myrtue Medical Center Auxiliary. In 1976, she was named the Harlan Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year. In 2008, Shelby County Mother’s Association selected her as the Shelby County Mother of the Year.

Pauline’s most cherished accomplishment was her family. She was extremely proud of her five children, eight grandchildren and her new great-grandson, all who affectionately call her "Polly." She loved phoning and emailing her kids to keep track of all their activities.

Pauline was reborn to eternal life May 27, 2011 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa after a three-year battle with breast cancer having attained the age of eighty-six years, one month and twenty-four days. In addition to her parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Ken, and her son Steve.

She is survived by her children: Paula and her husband Jerry Wiebel of Ames, Iowa; David Mueller and his wife Nancy of Kansas City, Missouri; Kathy and her husband Mark Swanson of St. Louis, Missouri; Deanna (Steve) Mueller of St. Louis, Missouri and Diane and her husband Todd Long of Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Rev. John Frost celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Todd Long, Chris Swanson, Tom Lewis, David Pope, Michael Miles, and Fred Lewis. Interment was held at Pleasant Township Cemetery in Griswold, Iowa.

"Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her."
