Marvin Mikkelsen - Age 83

Marvin Laverne Mikkelsen, son of Peter and Ethel (Petersen) Mikkelsen, was born on May 3, 1925, in Walnut, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa, where he remained a member throughout his life.

On October 7, 1952, Marvin was united in marriage to Marilyn Kardell at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Two children were born to this union: Steve and Sharon. After their wedding, Marvin and Marilyn made their home north of Jacksonville where they farmed until 1973, when they moved to Kimballton, Iowa. While in Kimballton, Marvin and Marilyn operated the Hilltop Drive-in. In 1983, the couple moved into Harlan where Marvin worked at the Pork Plant, Jacobs Tool, and Western Engineering until his retirement in 1997. When Marvin wasn’t busy working, he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

Marvin died on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at his home having attained the age of eighty-three years, nine months, and five days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn, and his brother Leland.

He is survived by his son Steve "Bear" Mikkelsen and his wife Karla of Harlan; his daughter Sharon "Shari" and her husband Monty Dillehay of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three grandchildren: Kyle Dillehay and his fiancé Megan Pletz of St. Louis, Missouri; Micala Dillehay of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Jana Mikkelsen of Harlan; his siblings: Joyce Nelson of Crescent, Iowa; Margie and her husband Dale Nelson of Elk Horn, Iowa; Virgil Mikkelsen and his wife Rose and Merlin Mikkelsen and his wife Sonya all of Atlantic, Iowa; Connie Maher of Hawarden, Iowa; and Roger Mikkelsen and his wife LaVonne of Elk Horn, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Iowa. Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 11:00 AM service. Serving as casket bearers were: Steve Bruck, George Buthmann, Kyle Dillehay, Steve Mikkelsen, Danny Mikkelsen, Kenyon Nelson, Steve Petersen, and Monty Dillehay. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
