Dorothy L. Liddell - Age 94

Dorothy Lucille Liddell was born on October 22, 1917 to George and Ethel (Palmer) Lembke in Griswold, Iowa. She grew up and lived around the Griswold, Carson, and Oakland, Iowa areas for most of her younger life.

She was united in marriage to Gordon Leslie White on November 22, 1938. Four daughters were born to this union: Pat, Sharon, Judy, and Donna. In 1956 they moved to Southern California and lived for thirteen years before moving back to Iowa in 1969.

Dorothy was a homemaker for most of her life. She inherited a green thumb from her mother and enjoyed growing flowers, both indoors and out. She spent a great deal of time on needlework projects and she crocheted afghans for nearly every close family member. She sewed nearly all of her daughters’ dresses, many from flour sacks. She also liked to dance at the rural barn dances and neighborhood socials and she loved watching Lawrence Welk and his polka music.

After Gordon’s death in 1972, Dorothy was married to Frank Hull, who died in 1987. Her last husband, Virgil Liddell, died in 2006.

Dorothy has lived in Harlan for the past twenty-three years, most recently at Elm Crest Retirement Home where she died on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, having attained the age of ninety-four years and eleven days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Gordon, Frank, and Virgil, five brothers, three sisters, three sons-in-law, and one grandchild.

She is survived by her daughters: Pat Gaer of Harlan, Iowa, Sharon and her husband Ron Higginbotham of Moorpark, California, Judy Cochran of Harlan, and Donna Dewey of Elma, Washington; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Woods of Council Bluffs, Iowa, brother, Doyle Lembke and his wife Barb of Carson, Iowa; other family members and friends.

Roy North officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Friday, November 11, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home. Inurnment was held at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland, Iowa.
