Lawrence J. Leenan - Age 83

Lawrence Joseph Leenan, the son of Jacob and Catherine (Blum) Leenan was born on November 3, 1926 in Defiance, Iowa. He attended school in Defiance for a short time, then grew to adulthood and attended school in Harlan, Iowa.

After finishing school Lawrence was employed at several Harlan businesses, including the Harlan Theater, Orv Rocker Ford, and the Harlan Newspapers. His position at the theater was as a projectionist as well as janitor for over twenty years. By 1965, he was also working in maintenance for Orv Rocker Ford and later he could be seen in his little blue Ford pickup driving for parts and helping to deliver and transport vehicles.

His interests were always in vehicles, particularly motorcycles. He ate out in restaurants a great deal of the time and had his favorite waitresses. They were his friends and were often recipients of motorcycle rides around town. Later as he retired, Lawrence was also helping out at the Harlan Newspapers delivering papers to the towns around Harlan.

When Lawrence retired, he continued to live in Harlan and could often be seen visiting his friends around town and going to Burger King and HyVee. He enjoyed music and especially listened to Lawrence Welk Orchestra.

In May of this year, Lawrence became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan where he died on October 12, 2010 having attained the age of eighty three years, eleven months, and nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Frost at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 18, 2010 at the Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Interment rites were conducted at the Harlan Cemetery with Orv Roecker, Greg Roecker, Fred Olsen and Verle Doonan serving as casket bearers.
