Dorman D. Leader - Age 69

Dorman Dale Leader was born October 11, 1942 to John and Leafy (Turner) Leader in Shenandoah, Iowa. Shortly after his birth, Dorman’s family moved to the family farm near Atlantic, Iowa where Dorman attended and later graduated from Atlantic High School.

After high school, Dorman was united in marriage to Janet Pellett on August 14, 1960. He graduated from Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska and worked at Chevrolet garages as a parts manager for eleven years. In 1972, Dorman, with his wife Janet at his side, embarked on a wonderful journey together managing Presbyterian camps and conference centers. They served twelve years directing the Presbyterian Camp on Lake Okoboji, Iowa, three years at Dwight Mission in Oklahoma and over twenty years as directors for Zephyr Point Center on Lake Tahoe, Nevada. In 2008, Dorman and Janet retired to Harlan, Iowa.

Dorman has given a lifetime service to church ministry, serving various offices in local churches, presbytery, and synod. He served as Chair on the National Presbyterian Family Camp Commission and was Moderator of Prospect Hill Presbytery. After retirement, Dorman served as a VITA Income Tax program volunteer through the ISU Extension Office of Shelby County; served as an advisor to Presbyterian Camp on Okoboji and led several mission projects for Presbyterian Camps throughout the United States.

He died on June 22, 2012 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of sixty-nine years. In addition to his parents, Dorman was preceded in death by an infant brother, Darwin.

He is survived by his wife Janet Leader of Harlan, son Gordon Leader and his wife Kathy of Preston, Iowa, daughter Melody and her husband Bob Huebner of Council Bluffs, Iowa, daughter Tammy and husband Ron Williams of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; his five grandchildren: Jacob Leader of Corydon, Mitchell Williams of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, James Leader of Preston, Nathan and Kelcie Huebner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his sister Darlene and her husband Gene Arentson of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

A Celebration of Life service was held on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 4:00 PM and officiated by Pastor Donna Ewert and David Feltman at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jacob Leader, Mitchell Williams, James Leader, Nathan Huebner, Kelcie Huebner, Joel Berndt, and Terry Arentson. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
