Byron D. Jensen - Age 78

Byron Dwight "Bardy" Jensen was born on August 28, 1933 to Grant and Mildred (Davis) Jensen in Hard Scratch (Logan), Iowa. He was baptized at Bethel Baptist church in Harlan, Iowa. He attended the Christian Church in Logan when he was young. His parents took him to Bible school in Harris Grove.

He attended grade school at Lincoln No. 1 and high school in Harlan.

On June 23, 1952 he entered into the United States Air Force in Omaha, Nebraska. He transferred to the Air Force Reserves and was assigned to the 6550th Supply Squadron and the Air Research and Development Command before being honorably discharged on June 22, 1956 from Patrick Air Force Base in Florida.

After he returned from Korea, he lived in Marshalltown with his sister and brother-in-law for a while before he returned to the Harlan, Iowa area where he farmed the homeplace.

Byron enjoyed hunting and fishing and received a lifetime fishing license. He loved sports and would often sneak out to his pickup to listen to ball games on the radio after family dinners. He enjoyed cats and dogs, especially his pet cat "Traveler" and his dog.

Byron died on Friday, April 13, 2012 at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, seven months, and sixteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his brothers Lowell Jensen and his wife Shirley of Crawfordsville, Indiana and Ronald Jensen and his wife Bev of Harlan, Iowa; sister Mary Stangl of Marshalltown, Iowa; special friend Shirley Baldwin of Harlan; nieces and nephews: Steve and Merry Jo, Wade and Linda, Elizabeth and Bret Thies, David and Beth, Rodney, Mark, Pam and Bill Volenec, Lori and Mike Hoffman, and, great-nieces and nephews: Angel and Justin Maschino, Holly and Rob Hons, and Danny Jensen, Emily and Barry Sorensen, Laura and Stephen Schulte, Willy Volenec, Mickala Volenec, Katie Volenec, Jill Jensen, Grant and Ashley Jensen, Hannah Jensen, Jude Hons, Jorgen and Hagen Sorensen, and Davis and Porter Schulte; other family members and many friends.

Pastor Joe Earle and Pastor Roger Crawford officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Bill Volenec, Mike Hoffmann, Bret Thies, Larry Schmitz, Norman Schmitz, Cletus Schmitz, Roger Schmitz, Russ Schmitz, and Jim Jo Schmitz. Serving as casket bearers were Steve Jensen, Wade Jensen, Rod Jensen, David Jensen, Mark Jensen, Willy Volenec, Grant Jensen, and Danny Jensen. Military rites were held by Defiance American Legion Post No. 707, Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150, and Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 at Astor Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.
