Clifford H. Hanson - Age 94

Clifford Howard Hanson was born on October 15, 1918, to Edward and Esther (Larson) Hanson at their home in rural Centuria, Wisconsin. When Clifford was about one year old, the family moved to a farm near Alma Center, Wisconsin where he spent his childhood and youth with his parents, six brothers and six sisters.

Clifford completed grade school at the one-room rural school near their home. He attended three years of high school at Merrillan High School and graduated with the Class of 1936 from Milltown High School in Wisconsin. In November of that year, he became Assistant Cashier at Waumandee State Bank in Waumandee, Wisconsin.

On May 21, 1941, Clifford was united in marriage to Phyllis Kindschy at Salem Evangelical Church near Waumandee. They had three children born to them: Leslie, Beverly and Bonnie. The family moved to Harlan, Iowa in November of 1941 where Clifford had accepted employment at the Harlan National Bank.

He was inducted into the United States Army on November 24, 1942 and served in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theaters and in England with an army hospital unit during World War II. After his honorable discharge on November 13, 1945 as a Staff Sargeant, he continued his employment at the bank until his retirement as Senior Vice President and Cashier on December 31, 1983. He served on the bank’s board of directors until 1994.

Clifford was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church in Harlan and was active in the ministries of the church, serving as deacon, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher.

Clifford died on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of ninety-four years, two months, and twenty-nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Leslie, all six brothers: David, Melvin, Edward, Arnold, Donald, and Clarence, and three sisters: Ruby, Esther, and Ruth.

He is survived by his wife of seventy-one years Phyllis Hanson of Harlan, Iowa; daughters Beverly and her husband Roger Sorensen of Harlan and Bonnie and her husband Bill Weilage of Council Bluffs, Iowa; ten grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Ethel Mahoney and Bonnie McPherson both of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Eunice Call of Alma Center, Wisconsin; other family members and friends.

Pastor Joe Earle officiated the 2:00 PM funeral service on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Linda Post and Jeff Swensen. Serving as casket bearers were Corey Sorensen, Barry Sorensen, Todd Sorensen, Tim Hanson, Troy Weilage, Shad Weilage, Tyler Davis, and Ryan Herrick. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
