Franklin D. Evans - 69

Franklin Duane Evans, son of John and Eunice (Swanson) Evans, was born on September 14, 1943 in Shelby, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. He was raised on a farm south of Shelby and graduated from Shelby-Tennant High School with the Class of 1962. After high school, he attended Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska. He then spent two years working at the Dodge Garage in Manning, Iowa.

On April 8, 1965, he entered the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on July 20, 1967. He married Marilyn Meredith on December 2, 1967 at the First Christian Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Andy, Allison and Joel.

Frank worked as a mechanic for seven years and then in 1974 he rented his first farm. Frank thought farming was something he would never get to do and it has truly been a joy. He enjoyed farming, his Oliver tractors, oil painting, toast and peanut butter and Cheetos. He enjoyed tinkering in his shop and working on his old tractors and designing new ways to make equipment work.

Frank loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion, a 4-H leader, he served on the county extension council and also as a township trustee.

Frank retired from farming in 2011 and on Sunday, October 21, 2012 he died at his home in Shelby having attained the age of sixty-nine years, one month and seven days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Marilyn Evans of Shelby; three children: Andy Evans of Dunlap, Iowa, Allison and her husband Richard Maassen of Persia, Iowa, and Joel Evans and his wife Erin of Shelby; four grandchildren: Alyssa Engle, Wyatt Evans, and Olivia and Meredith Maassen; his siblings: John Evans and his wife Doris of Fargo, North Dakota, Gerald Evans and his wife Jeanette of Shelby, Nancy and her husband Ken Collins of Shelby, Richard Evans of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Steven Evans and his wife Christy of Shelby; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pastor Jim Boardman officiated the 7:00 pm memorial service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Speakers were Andy Evans and David Paul and accompanist was Dianne Book. Military Rites were conducted by the American Legion Post Number 240 at a private inurnment in the Shelby Cemetery in Shelby, Iowa.
