Dorothy Kathryn Gold - Age 92

Dorothy Kathryn Gold was born on September 5, 1920 to William and Christina (Thompson) Ebert in Audubon, Iowa. She was a 1938 graduate of the Hancock Community School and continued her education at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, and the American Institute of Banking in Perry, Iowa. During her career, Dorothy worked at a number of banks in Nebraska, Iowa, and Colorado. She was very proud to be one of the first woman bank tellers in Omaha while working at Packers National Bank. For a time, she worked as a secretary for Aurora Public Schools in Colorado as well.

While working in Omaha, during World War II, Dorothy met Glenn Gold socially on a visit by servicemen to a friend’s family home. Glenn was stationed at the former Fort Crook, south of Omaha. Glenn and Dorothy were married on August 11, 1945 in Hancock, Iowa. One daughter, Sharon, was born to this union. In August of 1954, the family moved to Colorado.

In addition to raising her family during her years in Colorado, Dorothy was asked to serve as the National Secretary of the Trust Aid Systems Association and traveled extensively while in this role. She was also involved in several community organizations, such as the Order of Eastern Star. They were busy years, but she enjoyed them very much. She was named as the Operations Officer of the Trust Department at Mountain States Bank, where she continued her career until 1982 when she retired at the age of 62.

After retirement, she and Glenn enjoyed traveling, getting together with family and friends, spending winters in Arizona, summers at Poudre Canyon in Colorado, and putting down “roots” again in Hancock. Her family and friends agree that she had good business sense, a solid work ethic, and was always a welcoming hostess for guests.

Dorothy moved to Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa in June of 2009, and this is where she died on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 having attained the age of 92 years, 6 months, and 14 days. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; sister Della Mae; and two brothers, William Jr. (“Guy”) and John.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Zimmerman and granddaughter, Wendy Zimmerman, both of Aurora, Colorado; her sisters, Wilma Burtoff of Aurora, Colorado, Faye and her husband Don Scheffler of Hancock, Iowa, and Ruth Welch of Santa Maria, California; other relatives and friends.

Rev. Melissa Drake officiated the 2:30 pm graveside service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa on Friday, March 22, 2013. Serving as casket bearers were: Jim Scheffler, Mike Scheffler, Tom Scheffler, Mark Scheffler, Nolan Paulsen, and David Francois.
