Roy Edward Baron - Age 92

Roy Edward Baron, son of Lynn Edward and O’Dayle Fanny (Saunders) Baron, was born on April 16, 1918 in Atlantic, Iowa. He was baptized in the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School with the class of 1935. In high school, Roy played on the football team and after graduation he attended the University of Iowa. After his freshman year, Roy transferred to A.I.B. in Des Moines, Iowa where he graduated in 1936. He was employed as a feed salesman until he was inducted into the United States Army in Battery D of the 35th Army Air Force at Camp Wallace, Texas.

Roy was united in marriage to Ruth Maassen on March 16, 1941 at the home of her parents in Harlan. A daughter, Lynn, was born to this union. After receiving his honorable discharge, Roy entered into the grocery business with his brother-in-law, Howard Remien and they operated two grocery stores in Harlan. Roy also held positions with Lincoln National Life Insurance and Equitable Life Insurance companies. He also represented the Selective Service Office for a short time before accepting a position with the West Central Development Corporation. During his more than thirty years with this agency, Roy held positions as a counselor, Director of Labor Programs and Man Power Generalist. Roy was also a member of the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150 for over sixty-five years.

Golfing was a great pastime for Roy as was his interest in most types of athletic events and he was a current member of the Harlan Golf and Country Club. He retired in 1996 and continued to live in Harlan.

Roy died at the Elm Crest Retirement Community on Friday, October 15, 2010 having attained the age of ninety-two years, five months and twenty days. He was preceded in death by his parents. Roy is survived by his wife of over sixty-nine years, Ruth Baron of Harlan, Iowa and his daughter, Lynn Deasy of Palatine, Illinois; other relatives and many friends.

Military Rites were conducted at the Harlan Cemetery by the Harlan American Legion Post No. 150 at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, October 22, 2010. The honorary casket bearers were: Martin & Mary Jane Zaccone, Howard & Rhoda Henriksen, Dale & Dee Smith, Linda Simmons, Sue Daeges, Cheryl Holloway, Dee Thoms, Ruth Ridge, Ann D’Arcy and Janice Tiarks. The casket bearers were: Tom Zaccone, Joe Zaccone, Joel Dirks, Steve Anderson, Fritz Tiarks and Eddie Roos. A Memorial Service followed at 10:30 A.M. at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan with Pastor Donna Ewert and Linda Boggs officiating.
